Danny Brown will always be one of my favorite hip hop artists. His unique voice on the mic as well as the electronic elements in his beats keep me listening for life....I caught him live in Columbus OH around 2016 and he did not disappoint.

I think it has a lot to do with the way an entire race of people has nothing to “rebel” against in this genre that was created out of rebellion. Blacks have went from a position of oppression to a position of never-before-seen (in any race ) privilege. They’re just getting increasingly out of touch.

You completely skipped over the independent rap movement of the late 90's early 2000's , while that bad boy garbage was leading us to where we are

Hip hop died in the late 90's and what's followed has just capitalised and bastardised on what made it great. Commercial rap would be a better term.

asap rocky and yams, with the help/influences of clams casino, lil b, sgp, crafted the perfect blueprint for rappers to go off with LLA in 2011. however due to the industry pushing the likes of drake, kdot, tyler, etc as the new image of rap; rap as a whole has been on a rapid decline ever since. the fact that very little people recognise this fact is why alot of ppl are only just now making these video essays regarding the very death of the genre.

I think people are confusing going viral with being a good track.
Most of the current "rappers" go viral for a few moments and then disappear. they are all mostly the same and there is nothing unique about them.
There is no substance to their songs and their videos are either "im rich" or "let me twerk".

Another thing that was great about the genre was the difference between south, west etc rap in the late 80s and early 2000s. Now any regional rapper will mostly mumble or repeat the same word 90% of the song.

If punk was a genre of hip hop and not rock. The artist would have no flow, no delivery, and the music would sound like Noise. Ask John Liden about a punk and see what he says. If you wanna compare punk to anything compare it to drill. Both are sub genres and to be fair both have "some" "some" "some" good music. But for the most part no artistry.

Only thing rebellious about hip hop is the people who feel rebellious listening to it, same people who felt rebellious twisting their hips to rock on roll before elvis came along and gave them "ukin permission

I don't know how you mentioned avant-garde and Hip Hop and leave out MF DOOM, Sean Price, Roc Marciano, Billy Woods or ArmandHammer, , Griselda, Mach-Hommy and Dumpgawd, etc. Are we specifically talking about punk hip hop or commercial "pop" hip hop only here? If that's the case then I'll back off but if you talking avant-garde I don't know how you leave them out.

You left out a huge turning point in the genre: MF DOOM. He becomes more influential as the years go on, and he pioneered the stream-of-consciousness flow that a lot of MCs imitate in this lightning fast era of social media consumption.

I mean there's an unnoticed irony here I think. That we posit this as can 'hip hop innovate' seems to infer the abscence of any potential for a new genre and an acceptance that we are indeed wollowing in stagnant water culturally. A new genre means something you could not have conceieved of in terms of it's form before previously hearing it. The fact is I really struggle to see hip hop truly surprising me anymore.

A large part of this is to do with the rapid speeed of technological change outpacing our ability to acculturate to it I think and hence this converse effect of feeling like we keep putting the same things on repeat. The fact that in the years 1970-1990 there were many many new genres created. Compared to the last 20 years where no new genre's with the acception of dub step in the UK have been created. We're still talking about how we can seek more innovation out of a genre that's 40 years old. There might be some new takes but nothing that can truly be said to be a new form. IF you're asking the question of whether a genre is becoming stagnant you already have your answer there. The real question imo should be why we fail to see how abnormal it is historically to be like how i've described above for the last 20 years.

I think mia's album is one of the two pillers of avant garde hip hop, the other is mad villainy, that paved the way for the avant garde lyricists like earl sweatshirt, Billy woods, Khan. I think they also play a biiig role in the future of hip hop

Ответить
Vv
Vv - 31.10.2023 06:15

Giving MIA the credit for “prototype moment” for the genre is a little wild, especially when that year had all time albums such as. MBDTF, which may not have influenced the “experimental” aspects. However, Man On The Moon II, as well as Raw by Hopsin both played a major part the “avant-garde revolution.”

Also hip-hop is not dying, it’s evolving as all music/art does.
