Do you still like this setup? Have the beams gave in at all? And lastly would you feel safe with 2-3 people on the bed at a time (prob just 2 adults and a dog) lol. Thanks!!

Would self tapping screws save time on the brackets?

In a cold climate you have created a thermal bridge to your bed. The timber would broken that bridge. But structurally it's a good solution.

FIRST DRILL WITH A SMALL DIAMETER.

I ran into similar problems - solution was two 2 x 6 one on each side and simply cut grooves into board to hold the SKORVA. The saw blade is exact width of the rails! Makes the bed easily removable if you need to haul something. Used the same bed slats attached with heavy duty Velcro - again, easy to remove.

I did a bed like that in a van once.
But it folded up and dropped down into a single then double bed. So no loss of space during the day. 2 memory foam single matresses which folded up in half against the wall. This vid beings back memories.

IKEA bed slats - I was wondering, if you only screwed one end of each slat would the slat flex easier and conform to your body (hips, shoulders) and make a softer platform?

You can get self setting rib nuts that you don't need a tool. These nuts cost more but if you only have a few needed than cheaper than buying a tool. All you do is drill, tap in nut, squash the nut by tightening the bolt.

Step drill bits come on sale in Lidel quite regularly. Perfect for drilling holes in sheet metal.

So now your whole van is a bed? I don't think so.

Unscrew just the slat ends of the slats attached to the center rail and the rail near the front of the van. Now you can lift the rail out of its brackets in the front of the fan and slide the slats with the loose ends over the center rail towards the back. Bolt another set of rail brackets next to the center rail brackets and you can lock the forward rail in next to the center rail. Easily go from a double bed to a single.
