Blasphemous A Brief Review In 2023

Blasphemous II improves on the original in almost every way (especially platforming and traversal), but there’s an edge and a sense of lonely mystery that the first game has that the second game does away with in order to seemingly make it more accessible to a wider audience.

The mechanics of this game are outrageously bad, beautiful game, but not a fun experience actually playing

Found this game because I just popped my Metroidvania cherry yesterday Souls of Darkness on DS. Any other recommendations?

The sequel is out now, and it has completely lived up to the first. It has improved on everything it could and kept the perfect parts of the first just the way they were.

I play a lot of metroidvanias and for me, this was a solid 7 out of 10. This was sitting in my backlog for a few years and I just managed to play through it in light of the sequel's release.
As you mentioned, the visuals are awesome and the combat is tight enough. However, the game has certain shortcomings which become pronounced when compared to the giants of the genre like Hollow Knight.
I honestly think some of the beta testers mislead the devs by convincing them that they had a good foundation for platforming. They really didn't. The movement is what I'd describe as floaty. You can't move in precise pixels, rather you slide. And the game tries really hard to keep the platforming a big part of the game.
Overall, it's a good game and I can totally understand why the majority of players regard it as a masterpiece.

Great review! Or maybe philosophical musings about it as a work of art? Not sure. Maybe both.
Anyway, I still haven't finished the game, but I'd also give it a 9/10. A masterpiece. Certainly better than Death's Gambit (which I also liked).

I’m also sitting at a 9. By no means the BEST metroidvaina of all time, but definitely has the best art direction I’ve ever seen in a MV. The art alone makes playing it a joy.

“Dated by choice” is a really good way to put it
