Xbox Series X / PS5 are still 900p to 1080p consoles with Ray tracing technology and nanite graphics technology shadows enabled. Technology CPU limitations are real.

This game's performance has improved significantly on PC since launch. I have a 4080 and sit at around 90-100 fps at 4K Ultra with DLSS set to Quality. Nanite is really cool tech.

The fact that balance mode runs at 720p, and looks as sharp as it does feels like some kind of black magic is at play.
I think once all of the kinks are worked out of UE5, it's going to become an absolute beast of an engine, giving us some incredible visuals by generation's end.

I feel like the visual quality of this game is artificially downplayed in this review. For example, I believe that the graphical artifacts that occur after a camera cut are simply a non-issue. I think it´s not appropriate to call this out as a negative since is simply not noticeable unless you look at the gameplay frame by frame. It´s not appropriate to judge a game based on the result of some script that can detect this kind of inconsistency. It´d categorize this as a false-positive in my book.

Similarly the "bad" examples of ambient occlusion and screen space reflections in DF reviews are often portraying very negative examples that are not evident drawbacks while playing the game. Surely one can find blemishes when turning the camera in certain angles but what matters is the actual gameplay experience. I myself find it hard to even reproduce the corner cases that DF comes up with and I´d appreciate an approach that is closer to examples that can be easily noticeable by a human when playing the game.

Visuals never wins over GAMEPLAY.
This said, level or story, quests and gameplay of old pre 2005 titles and other like Dark Souls, Skyrim, Witcher 3/2, are not meet, boring games with good graphics but forgettable in the ... short run they have.

Once again the DLSS and FSR demon strikes. Its in the recommended settings to use these features and its ridiculous. Devs shouldn't be optimizing games around DLSS, FSR and the others, its crazy.

This game is absolutely garbage! So buggy unbelievable! First I started to play the game and made a progress till the character speaks to Ford, then I closed the game. Came back few days later, it put me back to play from the very beginning! Okay, I started playing again, so I go the point where Ford, Clementine and character touches the crystal and then it put me back to the campaign, I went back to the door I see Ford is sitting there and asked me to get help from Ave McCabe, but she can’t help me cause I don’t have material to craft and that’s because I already did it before! Done with this garbage and will request for refund. What a waste!

Does ultra settings on PC use screen space techniques? I haven't seen ambient occlusion flicker like that on PC although I haven't tried to force it. I'll see next time I play. In a sense, while that looks really awful in the video, I haven't experienced it once in memory. I guess it does the job well enough when you're looking straight ahead and focusing on destroying corrupted monsters in fantastic worlds.

Remnant 2 looks great when it comes to environmental detail, but because they decided to not create an alternative to Nanite, which is still a demanding piece of tech, the game suffers from performance issues and there's little that can be done to improve them since the biggest bottleneck is Nanite itself, which is why they rely so heavily on upscaling to make the game playable on a wide range of hardware, creating a less crisp look and visual artifacts that can be very distracting for those that are used to more traditional games.

Playing in balanced mode on ps5, it’s a nice looking game I can’t believe it’s 720p because some of the environments look tremendous

The thing that most worries me is that devs just say fuck it and start making games with "DLSS in mind" and make the resolution 720p.The game runs like shit both on console and pc.

There's almost a 'universal' method of tweaking UE4 shadows into somewhat more akin to soft/variable penumbra shadows (however, don't quote me on this, I'm not 100% sure, and I speak only judging by what my eyes see) which is done by editing the Engine.ini located somewhere in %localappdata% of a respective game, by adding the section [ConsoleVariables] in the end of the .ini file, with the specific line being

r.Shadow.FilterMethod=1

which from what I can gather enables different shadow filtering which does make shadows look more like true soft shadows than your ordinary UE4 shadows most games built on this game engine are shipped with (uniformly filtered shadows). At least that's my experience in Remnant 1 & Assetto Corsa Competizione (a note though - while it provides gorgeous soft shadows from, say, trees & foliage in ACC, it does provide somewhat similar looking results in Remnant 1, however, it also adds that blocky, pixelated, almost low-res look to some of the shadows in Remnant 1 as well, which is not the case in ACC. Say, dynamic shadows from the checkpoints in Remnant now look extremely blocky, for some reason. Thus the setting feels more of a YMMV thing, and it varies from game to game, I suppose, so actually it's not as universal as one might think).
Aaand here's to my question: I wonder, does the same setting appear in Remnant 2 as well? I was surprised when heard (and saw in the video) how R2's shadows are uniformly filtered, since I've always thought UE5 would provide penumbra shadows 'out-of-the-box'. It'd be wonderful if someone could test the setting & reply if it's working in R2, or not. Currently I can't do it myself since I'm not owning the game yet, and I don't know when I'll be able to get it and test it for myself, sadly.

VSM reduces FPS by 18%+ depending on the scene. Through the developer console, I turned off these Virtual Shadow

Screen Space Global Illumination - Unplayable feature
The first thing I saw when I first launched this game was artifacts. And they were so conspicuous that you can say it is unplayable in this form. Because no DLC and even DLSS FG has as many distracting artifacts as Remnant 2 has them without any DLSS.

Artifacts from SSGI
When I moved the camera, as soon as the camera approached the border of the screen, the shadows of objects in the game began to disappear/change from all sides of the screen. Straight huge spots were changing. It's too distracting and it's just awful.

The reason for the artifacts in this game turned out to be this very SSGI, which even if you set the minimum values in the game, it does not turn off.

SSGI will reduce FPS by 30%+ in future games
Through the developer console, I disabled SSGI and immediately got +34% FPS and removed all artifacts from this useless feature in this game.
The funny thing is that SSGI in this game is not even on ultra enabled, but on high and on ultra you can not turn on this setting without a console.

Now I understand why I was so impressed by the graphics I was like let me check which graphic engine they’re using because this thing looks sick on my LG C2 with everything in ultra settings on my pc then I see is the unreal engine 5 now it make so much sense this is my first unreal engine 5 title I try I’m excited now to see which new games are coming with this new graphics engine they’re not even a big big developers and only for using this the game looks so dam good

I've just bought 1st one on sale at a great price which includes 2 dlcs I loved it a lot when it came on gamepasss but it's not now & I've only got 3 achievements to get along with new ones for dlcs so I'm going to do that first as i heard the dlcs from 1st one tie in with the r2 then I'm buying rem 2 yess im so happy got fond memories of playing this hopefully the 2nd will be just as good even better

Oh man am I ever glad I just picked up a new gaming PC with a 4080. It looks and runs beautifully for the most part. 4K averaging between 65-80 fps. 720p seriously?? Makes me realize how good Sony’s devs are. Guerrilla, Insomniac, man they optimize the hell out of their games. Becoming a lost art in 2023

I’m running this game in Performance mode with my PS5 set to 1440p VRR output and it’s a pretty great experience (now that you can disable motion blur). I’m happy with the performance compared to other recent AAA games, but I do think this game is the best argument yet for a PS5 Pro. At least a locked 1080/60 would be very welcome, and 1440/60 would be wonderful for this title.

I have AMD 58003DX w a RTX3080 but played Remnant 2 mostly on my Steam Deck on my balcony in the sun. Played on low with almost locked 40 fps.
