strawberry jam is a popular mod for the game celeste. you should know it, colon played it. this mod is a collection of over a hundred short maps ranging from beginner to grandmaster difficulty. i've recently been attempting to do some of the easier maps deathless, and i've just gotten to a map called "paint". that's gonna be today's subject.
before i talk about this map, i want to make a few things clear: my computer is messed up, and it distorts the inputs from my keyboard. this means the timing is messed up. it also messes with my mouse, but you don't use the mouse in celeste. this has caused thousands of unfair deaths that are outside of my control, which in combination with the fact that i'm not the most stable person mentally, has caused me a hefty bunch of mental breakdowns. i will try to be as fair as possible but please note that i may be a bit biased against this map because of that.

paint is a fan favorite map in the collab. it's got some beautiful decoration (and i want to stress, it is absolutely stunning for a game like celeste), a neat little story, and the gameplay is pretty original. and i absolutely hate it. this is my hottest celeste take, it has to be. one of the mapmakers even called it randomly generated; which i'll take as a compliment, thank you very much. but why do i hate it so much?
let me draw a parallel here.
you're probably tired of hearing me talk about jacob collier, but for those at the back. jacob collier is a very controversial musician whose music i love. his most recent album in particular, "djesse vol. 4", has gathered the attention of many a music reviewer. and with this attention came loads of hate. i want to shine a light on brad taste in music's review in particular. i used to be a fan of his until i saw it. he's too negative and disregards every good aspect of the album. you could just see the jealousy in his eyes... 2/10? what a nonce. i don't get how people could hate like that, you know? i wouldn't have done that if i were him.
i'll be citing some common criticisms of the album along the way. let's talk about paint.

let's begin with the decoration. looks stunning. very virtuosic huh, there's like a billion tilesets, and a ton of decals. and oh would you look at that, there's depth! two different planes of tiles that look almost the same. not exactly the best thing to put in a precision platformer? i get that it's a beginner map, but please. i want to read it! i want to be able to look a few seconds in the future and not smash my head into plants in the background, or worse, fall through what i thought was a platform. please keep your maps simple! this has got to be showing off!
300 tracks in a single song? i mean, there has to be a point where you can ditch half of them! my ear can only focus on so much at a time. don't bloat your music, you don't need to play every chord just to show you can! there goes a major, there goes a dominant, there goes an augmented seven flat nine sus two, it's just not pleasing! please, know how to reject ideas!

there's a story too i guess. madeline (main character) goes for a walk, has some sort of episode or something and can't keep up, eventually finishes. i should mention maps in this mod pack tend to last for about 5 to 10 screens. then there are some longer maps like the grandmaster map "drifting deep" with 11 i believe? well, paint has, not counting collectibles or cutscenes, 32 screens. aw gee, it better be revolutionary then! that's huge! it better change my life. there are a total of 6 cutscenes in this map, 3 of which you need to skip when doing deathless. if i recall correctly. these cutscenes are: an intro (alright), autowalking and a single sentence (could be merged with the previous), looking up during an elevator (barely noticeable. also skipping the cutscene does not skip the elevator), some more lore (could've also been merged with the previous had they built the map a bit differently), a bus that connects the final third of the map to the rest (you still need to enter and exit manually), and an outro (fine). and after a while it just gets tiring to have to skip all of these cutscenes knowing that half of them could've easily been deleted. besides, i don't know if it's just me, but i don't get how it all ties together with the paint theme. also, i mean, the town is pretty cheery and lively. i'm sure any of those dozens of catgirls that are in the map would've housed madeline in their homes if she was feeling unwell. wait, i've just noticed, why is madeline the only human? i don't get it. i can't connect with it either. it's not something i'd go out of my way for. and i don't think it's worth it making a map 5 times longer than others for it either. i don't think it earns its runtime.
ah, that guy couldn't tell a story to save his life. have you read his lyrics? i think they're trying to tell me something but the ideas he brings together feel like they're gasping for air! it's very disjointed and superficial. and it lasts for an hour? no thanks, especially that 6 minute funeral song.

oh and the gameplay. that's the worst. the jist of it is this: half of the rooms are super easy. easy and boring. so boring that i couldn't keep myself awake playing it today. i'd have to resort to all sorts of fancy tricks to keep it engaging. it's a beginner map, sure, but there are other beginner maps with great gameplay out there. for example, soap. packed to the brim with fun gameplay (that you can sight-read!). but what gets me is this: for every five or six easy rooms there is one that has some type of frustrating timing or obscured input. remember how it was synced to the music? there are these lasers that pulse on and off with the beat, and inbetween these there are a few frames where neither laser is on. there are some screens where you have to exploit these frames, and the timings are super awkward. i find it easier to do advanced tech on those rooms because it's somehow less risky! there's one room that has a near pixel perfect input that i do to skip one of these because i swear it is so much easier. oh, and the paintbrush lasers and these moving cassette platforms that also go with the beat sometimes appear in the same room. that's pretty interesting, isn't it? well, these cycles can be misaligned. this means that they are at different states at the same time. and yep, you guessed it, there is a room deep into the map that can be actually physically impossible if you're unlucky. you can fix it, sure, but you can only see that you've messed up after you've gone past the point of no return! in celeste, there are binoculars you can look through to see the whole screen before playing it. this map doesn't have those, so you have to 1. know that that can happen, 2. memorize the correct cycle, and 3. memorize how it looks from the beginning. this is for a collectible, but for the love of all that is holy this collab has tons of playtesters! there's no way nobody noticed this! oh and the map has very few slopes in it! slopes aren't in vanilla celeste, they're modded features, and they're typical in these densely decorated maps. there's one screen where once you enter it, you have to stop holding your directional key almost immediately because if you don't, then a slope that you can barely sight-read will lauch you into a projectile! any normal person would add a ledge there! why is there a slope!
it's just so jarring coming to any track after the ones that come before it, you know? there's so many slogs in this album and then you get slapped in the face with generic rock whatevers, a djent breakdown jumpscare, several instances of ad music? get out of here! don't even get me started on box of stars. he gets a bunch of talented rappers, slaps them all together and takes a dump on them?! why did you have to put microtones all over this song? why are there panned door knocks? that just goes against the listener! why is there a risset parade? ARE THOSE DISCORD PINGS? please! work with a purpose! stop the self-pleasuring please you have an audience!

i'll add something about n1ckxd: he is a respected person in russian-speaking gd community bc he's one of the moderators of global list (aka russian demonlist)
the reason he was hacking is bc he was making videos like "prove this is hacked and get $5" and suddenly they started to gain a lot of views and he kept making them under the cover of a legitimate completition just to troll ppl. he then turned it into an "experiment" in which he wanted to test how long he could successfully defend hacked progresses with his hacking knowledge. to be fair, he never hacked progresses on a rated extreme demons. he also makes videos on a channel "GMD ЭКСПОУЗЕР".
