Do you suffer from stress and anxiety? Can one negative event sometimes spin you out for the whole day? Maybe someone cuts you up in traffic, you get a negative comment on a social media post, or someone from your past sends you a text message and suddenly you're ruminating and worrying, and you just can't snap out of it? If this sounds familiar, you might be suffering from what's referred to as low vagal tone and resetting your vagus nerve could help.

In this video we'll talk about vagal tone and some vagus nerve reset exercises that you can use at home to help you find more emotional balance.

ANATOMY
Your autonomic nervous system has two main branches – your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight), and parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). Your vagus nerve – your body’s 10th cranial nerve, which travels from your brain throughout your thoracic cavity – is largely responsible for your parasympathetic nervous system response.

Anxious people often struggle to activate their parasympathetic nervous system response in difficult situations. This is known as having low vagal tone. Someone with high vagal tone also feels the initial stress, but they are able to self-soothe and get on with their day, unlike someone with low vagal tone who may ruminate over a difficult event or situation for much longer. We can't bulletproof ourselves against negative stimuli, but we can balance our nervous systems so that we respond rather than react when faced with them.

Good sleep, health, and exercise are all beneficial for promoting high vagal tone, but there are also some medically backed tricks that can be really effective for resetting yours in the short term.

What is your opinion about weight lifting 4 times a week, when you're in 'survival mode' can it induce stress? I'd like to do it but feel like it could be giving me more stress

Hi, make sure you check with your doctor if you have lowe or high blood pressure. This excersies can increase or decrease your blood flow.

Hello and thank you for the video 🙏 I'm a French speaker and it's a bit difficult to understand everything, so I'd like to ask 2 questions:

Wow. I've had tachycardia since developing Long Covid. My heart meds suddenly stopped working today and my HR was stuck in the high 90s. The ice exercise brought it down to 78-82. Thank you!

Wow. I followed this (cold pack on the neck and valsava manoeuvre and within moments, suddenly found I was yawning constantly which I had not done all day….googled and yawning is a direct result of vagal nerve stimulation and reset. Thanks. I suffer from CHRONIC anxiety, Morning dreads…I can feel cortisol rushing though, I hope this helps.

I have severe abdominal pain at the sternum area and had surgery for hysterectomy and nissan fundolplation, hern and duodenal bleeding ulcer miss dx for over a year! Complete hysterectomy due to bilateral ovarian cyst and bleeding post menopausal x4 years. Still severe abdominal pain, heart racing, bradycardia..

my heart rate back to normal. I seem 😮 to start having anxiety everytime I have an episode of svt. Does this help pull me out of these episodes where my hearts beating sometime 175 beats a min.

THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE WITH AN ARRYTHMIA. I have inappropriate sinus tacchacardia with an arrythmia and this made me worse. Please give a warning for when this method should not be used.

The balloon one made me laugh about a childhood memory I have with that... When I was a little kid, I got poked in the finger with a safety pin and being a kid I didn't think anything of it or I guess just felt like I would get in trouble for some reason. After a few days it got a bit swollen and infected and I tried to hide it but it kept getting worse of course. So my parents took me to the hospital where they pierced it and put it in some liquid to sanitize. The sight of puss and my own blood coming out for the first time obviously freaked me out and I got really anxious. Like panic attack style I told my dad I thought I was going to throw up or pass out or something. Then the nurse kind of cracked a half smile and grabbed a rubber glove from the drawer. She asked me to see how fully I could blow it up, and then once or twice more acting all impressed. I felt completely fine after that! Go figure. 😁
