The "secret" to preventing all purpose mud from drying out is to put a small layer of water on the top when you're done. (Not much. Maybe an 8th of an inch at most, which also won't cover it all unless you try to smooth the top down flat with a clean trowel before you put the water on.) This drywall mud should generally be thinned to the consistency of pudding anyway, so next time you open it you'll just be mixing the water in anyway. Also, you'll need to regularly be cleaning out any pieces that get dry from the lid & sides, especially if the pieces fall in to the wet mud. But working with all purpose mud is very doable if you know what you're doing. The only exception is if you are going on material that will take hot mud and you need to put on thick without it sagging and you need to build it up quick. But hot mud is hard for most people for fine finish work unless the person really knows what they're doing from experience. I'd you're repairing and need to build up thick, quickly and avoid sag, then go with the hot mud. You can also do fine finish work over the top of hot mud if needed with thinned all purpose. But the problems he's mentioning in the video with all purpose actually and unfortunately show he isn't using it right. I use both all the time in my construction company where we do construction, finish and Handy man work.
ОтветитьI think all this stuff is too soft. It makes the walls easy to gouge.
ОтветитьThis video is Hysterical.....Have fun sanding new guy ...oh and think of this guy chipped out your metal spackle pan
ОтветитьHot mud is designed more as a filler then it is as a finish mud. If your not familiar with it stay away as it will frustrate the hell out of you.
ОтветитьWow seeing the bucket is only $14 in your video…and now they are $22 for a bucket..
ОтветитьThis cat is spreading bs. He must have read a book. If you are not using mud on a regularly stay away from hot mud. If you are using mud just for a week or so put water on top of it. But you con not keep it for months. But a week or 2 hurts nothing as long as it is not in the hot sun.
ОтветитьYou really don't have a clue.
ОтветитьHot mud is impossible to sand.
ОтветитьI hate pre-mix mud. Hot mud forever. I like being able to control the thickness, dry time, and you can burnish the hot mud.
ОтветитьPeople put your lid on tight mud will last clean the inside of your bucket before you put it away and save that plastic that comes in the bucket and replace it mud will be good I was a trainer for habitat habitat for humanity..😊
ОтветитьCan you use dry hot mud for drywall tape. I only have a little section before I put texture paint over it
ОтветитьQuick set mud is only good for fast repairs. People reading this comment, PLEASE don’t use quick set for a final coat. It sands horribly. Really grainy. Also painting over quick set poses the risk of the paint reactivating the quick set causing it to peel up. Buckets lock in moisture and that mud can last for weeks. I honestly disagree with every point in this video.
ОтветитьI’ve seen it mold before. What I do since I do small patches is keep a bag of easysand and pre-mix. To avoid the mold and keep it fresh put a piece of wax paper on top. I trace the lid, tap the bucket on the floor to level it, clean around the edges and put the wax paper on, then the lid. I’ve had it last for months.
ОтветитьGee what is the plastic liner for that you put over the unused portion.
ОтветитьNo idea what he’s talking about. Mud doesn’t just dry up right away like that at all
ОтветитьWhat a Gent! Thank you!
ОтветитьI have that joint compound the green one that says ALL PURPOSE and I just use a plastic grocery bag on the top of the material and then close the lid shut - I’ve had it for months and the top hasn’t dried or hardened at all - the bag keep the air from touching the joint compound.
ОтветитьI've used hot mud before, it never set before I wanted to.
ОтветитьI was hoping to see the benefits of using quick set mud is that you can work it before its totally dry.
ОтветитьThis guy knows what he's talking about. Hot mud sticks fine to paint - just clean off any grease, and if the paint has gloss rough it up with sandpaper.
ОтветитьHonestly… Thi guy don’t know shit about quality.. period
ОтветитьRead Your Comments , these are the Expert's in this field !! They do not Agree with You , because you are Wrong !!! I only watched for 2 minutes an knew you should not do video's of what do not know 😅
ОтветитьGreat video and tips, thanks so much!
ОтветитьGreen lid mud is quality mud. I would not discourage its use like I do when it comes to the soft joint compounds.
ОтветитьI learned this the hardway damn near had a heart attack opening up a container with mold in it 😅
ОтветитьCarried a bag in your van for 3 years clearly doesn’t do many jobs
ОтветитьLiterally just throw a thin layer of water on top of the mud and make sure the lid is on tite and you’re good to go with the all purpose 🤷🏻♂️
ОтветитьI use the mud in a tub to make my stone walls . It works great! It will keep a few weeks as well
Plus no unhealthy mixing! It hardens up in a few hrs giving you plenty of time to work it!
Hot mud gets lumpy for me
ОтветитьThe trick with applying any mud is pull it tight, and you won’t have to sand
ОтветитьWhy do people that are not drywall professionals tell you how to drywall. USE THE BUCKETS
ОтветитьHot mud also known as durabond. Best to use durabond on the first coat over screen tape if not its sure to crack!! After the first coat it's ok to use regular mud. Hope this helps! Thanks for posting. I have 30 years experience.
ОтветитьDude I literally have a 7kg cgc joint compound bucket from 17 years ago. Never had a issue.
ОтветитьQuick set (hot mud) is garbage in my opinion. Hard to sand and not a good surface finish.
Ответить2 years later and they are $9 more pre bucket. I miss the good old days when everything was reasonably priced.
ОтветитьI see in home Depot A Lot of construction workers always buys all purpose
ОтветитьI bought a large bucket of the all purpose green lid 7 years ago to skim coat my ceilings after scraping the popcorn. I used about two-thirds of the mud and left the remaining 1/3 in the bucket. I covered the mud with a piece of plastic and then added a little bit of water on top of the plastic. I opened it today after 7 years and used it to skim coat another ceiling. It was just like new. Just FYI!!!!
ОтветитьThank youuuuu.
Ответитьget a job, hippie
ОтветитьAn open drywall compound bucket can keep for months. At the end of the day I clean off the excess mud from the walls of the bucket. Then I take a clean rag wet it and cover the compound completely with the rag. Lastly I seal the lid and store it.
ОтветитьI use it for first coat maybe second, third coat pre mix compound . Quick dry sucks for sanding .
ОтветитьCarpenters are not drywallers, you do not want to be doing finish coats in hot mud.
ОтветитьThis is why you are a "carpenter". You need to use the plastic film that comes inside of the bucket to lay against the compound within the bucket – removing air pockets. This will help the bucket of mud to last for an extremely long time. If it begins to dry, just add some purified water to your pan mix and use a mixing rod (or eggbeater designated for construction) and drill to incorporate it well.
Voila. You are welcome. 😏
I am not sure if I would get the 5 min quick set unless it is for really small jobs. I mixed up a big batch of it and dang stuff started setting up before i got it half done. lol or im just not fast enough for that one.
ОтветитьHoly crap I'm confused - I'm patching a 12" x 4" hole above my fireplace needed to cut to add an outlet. I used mesh tape. I bough 5 minute hot mud because I read using All purpose with the tape is a no-no. I'm a rookie. Perhaps I should use the 20 minutes instead and finish it off with the green bucket?
ОтветитьThank you
ОтветитьI had mine sit for a long time and it deosnt even dry out
ОтветитьBulshit
ОтветитьPlus it’s also called durabond in most areas instead of that crap. This boy don’t know shit about drywall
