When Most DIYers need to do drywall or plaster repairs, they rush out and get a bucket of pre-mixed drywall mud. Though convenient, this joint compound can be a waste! This video from The Honest Carpenter will show you a better solution for doing small drywall and plaster repairs--QUICK SETTING JOINT COMPOUND!

Quick Setting Joint compound is sometimes called "Hot Mud" in the construction industry, because it hardens by a chemical reaction, rather than an evaporative process like pre-mixed bucket drywall mud.

Quick-setting compound comes in a variety of grades--the various numbers on the bag indicate hardening time -- either 90 minutes, 45 minutes, 20 minutes, or even 5 minutes. This is your working time after you mix it. So, you need to get the quick setting joint compound on the wall before it begins to harden!

HOW TO MIX QUICK SETTING JOINT COMPOUND / DRYWALL MUD / HOT MUD
1) Dip some water into the bottom of your mud pan
2) Dump a little joint compound onto the water
3) Stir joint compound and water back and forth until they begin to mix
4) Look for a consistency similar to peanut butter for most coats
5) If joint compound looks too soupy, add a little more drywall mud powder.
6) If joint compound looks too thick, add a little more water with a sponge

AVOID OVER-MIXING! You just need to get the parts stirred together, then it's ready for use for filling dips, craters and gouges in drywall and plaster repair!

The "secret" to preventing all purpose mud from drying out is to put a small layer of water on the top when you're done. (Not much. Maybe an 8th of an inch at most, which also won't cover it all unless you try to smooth the top down flat with a clean trowel before you put the water on.) This drywall mud should generally be thinned to the consistency of pudding anyway, so next time you open it you'll just be mixing the water in anyway. Also, you'll need to regularly be cleaning out any pieces that get dry from the lid & sides, especially if the pieces fall in to the wet mud. But working with all purpose mud is very doable if you know what you're doing. The only exception is if you are going on material that will take hot mud and you need to put on thick without it sagging and you need to build it up quick. But hot mud is hard for most people for fine finish work unless the person really knows what they're doing from experience. I'd you're repairing and need to build up thick, quickly and avoid sag, then go with the hot mud. You can also do fine finish work over the top of hot mud if needed with thinned all purpose. But the problems he's mentioning in the video with all purpose actually and unfortunately show he isn't using it right. I use both all the time in my construction company where we do construction, finish and Handy man work.

Hot mud is designed more as a filler then it is as a finish mud. If your not familiar with it stay away as it will frustrate the hell out of you.

This cat is spreading bs. He must have read a book. If you are not using mud on a regularly stay away from hot mud. If you are using mud just for a week or so put water on top of it. But you con not keep it for months. But a week or 2 hurts nothing as long as it is not in the hot sun.

Quick set mud is only good for fast repairs. People reading this comment, PLEASE don’t use quick set for a final coat. It sands horribly. Really grainy. Also painting over quick set poses the risk of the paint reactivating the quick set causing it to peel up. Buckets lock in moisture and that mud can last for weeks. I honestly disagree with every point in this video.

I’ve seen it mold before. What I do since I do small patches is keep a bag of easysand and pre-mix. To avoid the mold and keep it fresh put a piece of wax paper on top. I trace the lid, tap the bucket on the floor to level it, clean around the edges and put the wax paper on, then the lid. I’ve had it last for months.

I have that joint compound the green one that says ALL PURPOSE and I just use a plastic grocery bag on the top of the material and then close the lid shut - I’ve had it for months and the top hasn’t dried or hardened at all - the bag keep the air from touching the joint compound.

I bought a large bucket of the all purpose green lid 7 years ago to skim coat my ceilings after scraping the popcorn. I used about two-thirds of the mud and left the remaining 1/3 in the bucket. I covered the mud with a piece of plastic and then added a little bit of water on top of the plastic. I opened it today after 7 years and used it to skim coat another ceiling. It was just like new. Just FYI!!!!

An open drywall compound bucket can keep for months. At the end of the day I clean off the excess mud from the walls of the bucket. Then I take a clean rag wet it and cover the compound completely with the rag. Lastly I seal the lid and store it.

Carpenters are not drywallers, you do not want to be doing finish coats in hot mud.

Ответить
Brick Hurl
Brick Hurl - 18.12.2022 22:23

This is why you are a "carpenter". You need to use the plastic film that comes inside of the bucket to lay against the compound within the bucket – removing air pockets. This will help the bucket of mud to last for an extremely long time. If it begins to dry, just add some purified water to your pan mix and use a mixing rod (or eggbeater designated for construction) and drill to incorporate it well.
Voila. You are welcome. 😏

I bough 5 minute hot mud because I read using All purpose with the tape is a no-no. I'm a rookie. Perhaps I should use the 20 minutes instead and finish it off with the green bucket?
