I have my own head canon that breathing techniques do invoke elements. It’s the one thing about demon slayer i severally dislike. There’s already magic in this manga, humans already do things that beyond super human, so it just doesn’t make sense to me that demon slayers don’t invoke the element of their breathing styles.

The visual effects that you see like water, Fire, or thunder is a visual representation of what’s actually happening because the sword skills are based of real life Japanese sword practices. For example Flame Breathing is based off Kendo. The effects just simple represent the way that the style works like how water is flowy and adaptive. Wind is pure attack power, thunder is quick strikes…etc
