The 5.56 just doesn't have the 7.62x51mm NATO's sheer size (.30 cal) and mass (military loads being from 145 gr. to 175 gr. M118) The 7.62x51 NATO (Or 308 Winchester. Not to be confused with the 7.62x39mm Russian or 7.62x54R) The 55 gr. 5.56 goes on average 3,250 at about 1,289 Ft Lbs of Energy (im not looking at ballistics charts and giving ballpart figures.) The 7.62x51mm with a 155 gr.goes on average 2,751 at 2,602 ft lbs. This is chronographed through our M14 National Match.

@ciconcrete shooting at the gel isn't the same thing as shooting as live flesh and ones. If you really believe that .223 is more effective than a .308 round, I don't know what else to say...

@IamArob0t im not a gun expert or anything but the bullet type has alot to do. Some expand faster than others depending on what the bullet was made for. For example, a hollow point would expand much faster than a full metal jacket. anyone correct me if im wrong haha

@goalieslayer You need to learn what "ballistics" means, or get some experience. And the term "knock down power" was discredited about a decade after bullets were used.

@aguyinpostfalls when a bullet hits a person the force dose not just all go through, the shock spreads threw out the body, so depending on the distance you probably could knock someone down. A 7.62 is a fatter bullet then a .223 but much slower, this is why it has more "knock down" power. Thats why the military made the 6.8 mm rec 7, it has greater range than the 7.62 but has greater knock down than 5.56

@aguyinpostfalls one exception, the 12 gauge slug has enough mass to and energy to knock you over. But other then that, yeah, Hollywood has gone waaayy overboard.

The hydrostatic shock will push you into the direction of the shot unlike in movies ware it looks like someone hitting you with a bat.

@labartic Actually, both 5.56 and 7.62 will go right through whoever they hit. No bullet will knock someone over by it's force. If/when they go over it will be because of trauma and shock, and they will usually pass out in less than 14 seconds unless it's a head shot, then they will be dead immediately. Beyond that, the pressure is too great over too small an area to knock someone over. If the bullet was 4" across, then it would knock you over.
