For awhile I worked with men who had been released from incarceration and one in particular kept telling me I needed to see Heat -- I refused because I assumed it would involve witnessing a good deal of violence and at the time I was surrounded by enough of it in real life. Years later, after seeing Last of the Mohicans and becoming curious about his filmmaking, I did watch Heat and understood, among other things, why it had been so valued by men who would have been considered to be on the 'wrong' side of things. Michael Mann respected those men and valued their lives and that was communicated to them in this film. It is a masterpiece.
