I have watched a few videos comparing these cameras and this is the only one that gave the Nikon the lose in video focusing.
Would have been nice if you guys would have given more info on how these cameras got set up for these tests.
Could have been user error.

Thinking of getting a canon R6 mark II camera with the 24~105mm L lens mirrorless Fuller’s frame camera. Don’t really do video but mostly do landscape & wildlife photography. Your opinion?

Ive been a nikon user past 10 years i see nothing here that would make me change eco systems when nikon is the newest and boast higher video capabilities thanks for this i think it reallt comes down to personal preferences cannon feels like a cheap toy nikon build is better for me, im 6,6 bug hands lol

I hate you both! I'll buye one of these cameras (Canon R5 Mark II - not yet available or Z8 or 7RV). But why do I hate you? 80-81-82 points and a perfect comment on that... But still I hate you... Because I have three priorities and EACH CAMERA excels in ONE! Now: which one is the right camera for me!? 🤣🤣🤣

OK, I have to admit: I don't hate you. Thanks for the Video!

I think that Sony wins for me too although wildlife is a big point for me. But 15K for the tele isn't my budget anyways 😂 - and Sony has the largest choice for lens. That would be the fourth criteria...

Cannon didnt win just because of the apps and lenses. Dont forget you can still adapt amazing EF glass.

Nikon lost me immediately with no mechanical shutter and a heavy bulky body. Canon lost me at no third party lenses. I own both Canon and Nikon cameras but have never owned a Sony. That said, if I was picking one of these based on your review and also JP Morgan's reviews, I'd almost certainly go with the Sony.

just got a a7r5 after many years with a7r3. one problem nobody mentions is the horrible electronic level. as an architectural photog, it has too much "play" in the green bars. meaning -- it thinks it is vertical\level but it is way off. my canon 5dsr was much better. i wish sony allowed a "level sensitivity" adjustment so the level was more accurate like canon. sure, i can fix in post, but should not have to.

Glad you actually make no bones as to which camera you actually prefer. Thanks.
Because of lens selection affordability - and because of historical choice ( minolta ) I am just wishing/hoping that the A7r5 gets a$900 discount somewhere this month....I can dream.

I'm pleased that Nikon appears to be upping it's game. It's good for some things but not best here IMO. Still the better they do the more I like it - all end users benefit from strong competition.

Each to their own (ecosystem). Not any good reason for anyone heavily invested in any C,N or S system to seriously consider switching. In future it's likely that all cameras will still be better. Im looking forward to an improved a1 and happy that my friends who shoot C or N have good options too.

@rickymcc8624
@rickymcc8624 - 22.10.2023 19:55

Clearly all are good. In many ways it's academic to serious users, because by the time you are seriously shooting, you probably have a bunch of lenses and a relatively heavy investment in one particular ecosystem.

Arguably these aren't typical 'newbie' entry level bodies. It's new system buyers who perhaps more likely have the option to pick which ecosystem to back.

I used to be a Nikon shooter (28 yrs). But, surprised myself, late 2018, by selling 15+ Nikkor F lenses and several bodies and switched to Sony. Overall no regrets. But the cost of switching was painful (ie expensive). So not something I'd do again unless Sony 'dropped the ball' (most unlikely, as they are probably better at listening to consumers, whilst N, IMO, were deaf to ordinary users.

The scoring system is confusing one minute they are gettinf 10,9 and 8 and in another test 10, 7, 4 😅 sure 3 for winner 2 for second and 1 for third could be simpler to follow for future ones

Canon R5 mk2 will be launched in early 2024. I honestly think it could grab huge market-share if they do it right.
Surely we're approaching "enough is enough" when we have 60Mp, 4K & 8K video at high frame rates, and mirrorless focusing abilities.
I sense that the R5 Mk2 will be the camera to finally get me off my Canon DSLRs.

Thank you, T&C! As someone who’s still researching, this review of multiple categories is invaluable. One more criterion (and Chelsea alluded to this briefly) is the lens (or set of) that one would be attracted to, based on intended usage. Often times, a body is selected based on glass, specially when — like in this review — their ratings were so close.

I am having the hardest time finding the right camera for me....I am looking for a great camera for sports and wildlife! I shoot mostly sports (wrestling) and safari. I looked at the z8 but could not find a lens that would work for me (I can only afford to purchase 1 multi use lens-currently using a 50-300 tamron and would love something a little longer). I am usually on safari and in situations that I do not have the time to change back and fourth between different lenses and can only take 1 set up . Nikon does not have a lens that will work or at least I cannot find one. Sony is compatible with the tamron 50-400 (which I've heard is fairly good). Does anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

Z8 is special for the fast readout speeds for sure. But funny when Nikon shooters, who have never shot another system get made when someone criticizes the eye af. The Canon R5 still beats it… but check this out, the R8 is better than the R5, I’ve used both. So the 1500 dollar camera is better.

Im glad the Nikon works for you, but it just isn’t AS good AS Canon.

I'll always choose a sony for the lens selection, the GM/ GM II are the best out there, plus the added third party selection beats everything out there. As for Camera bodies, they'll keep coming, Z8 definitely is better for wildlife at the moment maybe for a few more months, but the Sony a9iii will arrive soon. The one important lesson I have learnt over time is to invest in lenses, bodies keep coming, go with the system that has the best lenses for you.

Looking for overall weight and lightweight lenses. Primarily for travel and landscape as well as some portrait and macro work. Shoot with Nikon D850 professionally, but getting ready to retire and travel and will most likely switch to Sony. I did have a Sony 6300 which I never warmed to, due to the size and menus. I'm also spoiled by the Dynamic Range in the full frame. I have a Nikon D600 that I bought years ago that works just fine, but the Sony looks like something worth splurging on. Thanks for all thorough research and useful information.

So basically if you don't mind a camera that weighs enough to need a monopod and can't focus, buy a Nikon! Oh except for wildlife when it can focus. Oh and you definitely need the essential silent shutter cos it's been impossible to shoot wildlife without one of those for the last few decades. Really?

OTOH I wouldn't use a Nikon for the weight which is plain ridiculous. If you wan't to throw away the advantages of a mirrorless FF camera in terms of usability then why not go up to a bigger frame? The rest is just nothing. Absolutely nothing. Apart from the Nikon's unreliable focus system

Each has strengths in different areas so very user specific. No clear winner or loser in terms of traditional camera performance.

All were losers in the apps department. Which is important. Can't beat a smartphone in ease of use. Can we get the apps working? Yes... However... it isn't seamless, fast and effortless. Still an afterthought. After eye-AF I think this is the next big QoL improvement.

I want the camera to be a natural extension of the smartphone replacing it's built-in camera. Would dump my system for any mfg that can achieve this. So far they're all resisting the movement. Kinda like how some car mfg clinging on to their own proprietary infotainment system instead of embracing Apple carplay or Android auto that people actually want.

Good test but I wouldn't take off any points for Z8 weight/size as the test was for handling and Nikon's ergonomics are best in the industry.Also the IBIS on my Z6II is pretty amazing, I can shoot 400mm at 1/30 and have at least 75% sharp pictures and for a non VR lens 24-120 I can shoot at 1/15 at 120mm no problems either.
