I'm finding this video super late, but this is definitely something I want to see more. I work for the Marin County Free Library system and I want to push for us to get a gaming collection. I'm surprised that you found this in Napa. I'll have to reach out and ask them more details about circulation logistics, and how the investment has worked for them! Thanks for covering this

regarding the 100 thousands of dollars it sounds more like they are getting 300 games for every console, which would be thousands and thousands of games

Hey there.. Great video.
what i get from my studies on Library and information science at my college is that library should be storing information and knowledge regardless of their form. Books, videos, musics, papers, e-books, and even video games (yes they contains knowledge too). So i think adding video games into the collection was actually a brilliant move. Not only that they fulfil their function to store information and entertain users through, but they were also promoting themselves to the people especially teenagers whom has great interest on video games.

Ironically, in my country most (older) people still expect all games to be addictive, violent, sexual, and all that negative thinkings, even though there are also countless games that we could learn so much from. I cannot find any library that have added video games into their collection yet here. Not even school library or public library.
It's sad to see that they're dying to get people come to read their books, and i think promotion through video games are the key to get them coming, hoping that they will take a glance on some books on their time at the library.
Better than not having all the customers isn't it?

The problem is that most people dont respect the discs they dont treat them with respect. So they probably will get in very bad condition very fast.

Forget about needing to rent games. In my city(possibly most/all Canadian cities), you can borrow from the pubic library system, a wide selection of last/current gen games for free. Borrow it for a week, return if someone else has it on hold. Or you can keep it for up to 3 weeks.

I went to my local library just now and was blown away by the number of new titles they had available for ps4 and Xbox one. Granted there was only about a 100 games total, but there was some really choice ones. I checked out Yakuza 0 and some rare Wii titles as well. Thanks for the tip:)

I've been to that Naperville library many times in the past and it's crazy that you got a clip from there. I haven't been to a public library in years but I'm curious what some of them that have video games are going to do when physical media is totally phased out.

Why would they put video games in libraries when they are just a distraction to your studies and some students don't even play videogames but they come to the library just to study not to develop gaming addiction or watching movies

The fact that libraries are offering video games for rental is a brilliant idea. It's a great way for them to expand beyond books, CD's, magazines, etc. To be honest, I haven't been to a library since I graduated from UHV back in 2007. Having said that, it would be interesting to go to a couple of libraries to see what video games they currently have. With that aside, thanks Jimmy. God bless!

Thoughts:
::I don't always have time to finish a game in the time in a library checkout period (even with renewals). However, it would be a good way to see if I would like to buy it.
::I think game rooms at the library could be good as "meeting rooms" for people if the library has the space.
::The hundred thousand dollar expenditure is likely a miscommunication - They probably mean they will expand the library collection of games from 300 to a higher number. It also could mean 300 titles, but multiple copies of each title.
::Most libraries lend digital titles of books. One wonders if a library could lend digital titles of music, movies and games.

Really like this idea cause gaming as it is has a big problem with preservation compared to any other piece of media and libraries adapting to this is a great way for them to evolve

I think it's great that libraries and librarians realize the value of videogames in the modern age.
Not many people read traditional books, listen to music CDs, read the newspaper, etc. More and more people are into digital forms of news and entertainment. It's just too bad it took them as long as they have to finally accept this.
People need to realize that videogames are not just a thing for kids and more often than not, people in their mid 20s ~ 40s are playing and buying videogames.
Unless I am mistaken, videogames are the most profitable and popular form of entertainment today.
