I will never give money to HP ever again. I just got a Canon Selphy and called it a day.

HP prints looks way overexposed and warm...good to know.
Using Sephy models here for the last 10y, they all suffer a slight lack of saturation and where on the cold side.

Thanks for sharing !

I had an Olympus Dye Sub back in the day. Came a time I could not get drivers for it. Eventually Olympus stop making them. I don't get why manufacturers think there is no market for a large Dye Sub Printer. They are excellent.

Looks exactly the same as the Canon Selphy dye sub printer I had 20 years ago. The only difference is it uses an app now. They produce great photos, but it doesn't seem like the tech has moved on at all in 20 years. One consideration is that they do produce a lot of plastic waste that isn't easily recyclable, so that might be an issue for some.

Better models are made by Citizen who also makes the DNS machines. Those dye sub ribbon based printers only have 3 colors which means you get a composite black (or very dark brown). The Citizen models have a maximum print resolution of 600x600 whereas the DNS branded ones top out at 600x300 dpi. These two brands use a roll of specially coated paper with their 3 panel ribbon printers. They work together providing about 50 prints per roll/ribbon combo. There is always some quantity of paper and ribbon left over after the 50th print which is wasteful. The other wasteful part of ribbons is you can't go back to use the portion of the ribbon that was NOT used to make a print. But getting back to your question is there a better way to make border-free dye sub ribbon prints? Yes there is. These machines feature an automatically trimming blade that cuts the excess paper down to the size of the print. You typically set that up in software the size of the print you are making. The largest models out can handle 8x10 and panoramic prints at some odd paper size. They also have a tray in the front to catch the trimmings. These types of machines are favored by digital photographers who make a living capturing memories with Santa, Easter Bunny, theme parks, zoos, etc.

No question Dye/sub printers render GR8T photos. But you are "married" to HP for the consumables until they decide to divorce you, yes? And I'll guarantee they are the only game in town that sells these cartridges. And history testifies to this.. there are older HP Dye printers that are cheap as chips 2nd hand because the carts are no longer available. HP loves to keep one hand on your jewels and one had in your pocket. Just saying. The buyer just needs to be aware of these limitations. But great video. Thumbs up!

I have a competitors model(Canon Selphy 1500) which uses the same printing method and I am very happy with the results.

Someone needs to disrupt inkjet printers like framework is doing to laptops.

Oh man, dye sub prints were the business when I was in college. I wonder if they make larger versions.

I hate when technology relies only on apps.
