This is what early new-who Doctor Who taught me as a kid. A version of being a dude where being the good guy didnt mean killing the bad guy...but being kind.

I love how, if we notice, we can always see him make situations better even though his wife (and maybe even the viewer) does not notice. For example, in the end he gets an extension even though his wife thinks he is ruining the situation. That same situation is seen once before when she is in the closet and thinks her husband is making things worse even though he gets an extension till 6pm and she never notices/ appreciates it.

I love that every Waymond in every universe is just the best with the sole exception of Alpha Waymond. Though she may seem enamored with him, Evelyn also refuses to play along with his domineering ways, treating it as if he's acting as ridiculous and strange as he really would be irl. And while the audience may initially think main Waymond is a bit ridiculous (if they're lame), the sole characteristic of that is him just being silly, dancing with customers, putting googly eyes on things, etc.

Nothing about Alpha Waymond seems natural, it all seems put on and absurd. Evelyn may he dependent on him at the beginning to survive, but she and the audience quickly question his character when for all his machismo, he leaves at the first sign of true trouble and leaves her holding the bag.

Then contrast that with Waymond's everlasting honesty, in the main universe, in the unaffected universe, in the hollywood star universe. And that honesty showing that nothing about his character speaks to a repressed rage kind of character, nor putting on the charm for expectation, nor wannabe machismo nor self-centeredness. He genuinely believes in the power of kindness and has through his life molded himself into someone who embodies it, which can't have been easy even for him. While the Alpha Waymond doesn't really believe in the domineering or macho act he puts on, abandoning the situation as soon as the act can no longer help him out of it.

Waymond is a man who is and Alpha Waymond is a man who thinks he is.

It really reflects on how most people see these "Alpha Male" clowns and influencers. All put on, so obviously an act, grown men acting like 12 year olds when they adopt the personality of the cool guy in a movie. Oblivious to how they're looked at alienly, how the alpha paradigm doesn't exist (not even in wolves where it was first created actually) and clearly acting strangely and inhuman to the rest of us. Even the most lame people have to realize by the end how exhausting an Alpha Waymond would be to be around and the guy who dances with his laundromat customers is the better human in every way.

As a woman who is extremely sensitive, Waymond is the ideal in a partner. Someone who leads in kindness and empathy, that actionable and radical empathy is what would work with us to navigate the world would be such a gift.

I really love your channel but I feel you (and others who make similar content) tend to overstate common writing advice as absolute rules of storytelling. I felt this video contained a case in point, talking about how Waymond doesn't change as a character and how this "shouldn't work". No, stories don't require a character to change from the beginning to the end in order to "work". Certain types of stories do, and it's certainly an aspect of stories that modern audiences find very appealing, but it's not an absolute requirement for any story to work! Stories aren't just about people they're also about situations and places, the people the stories are about don't have to be the "main character" (for example many 20th-century procedurals have little to no character growth in the central character but do have it in the peripheral characters-of-the-week, and there is a good argument that such procedurals are about those peripheral characters more than the recurring ones. But people still find the recurring detectives & sidekicks with little to no character growth appealing!). And even stories about people don't necessarily need to use major personal change as a mechanism to explore those people. (I say "major" because you can make me trivially wrong by accepting small enough changes as "change" but I don't think "characters need an arc" is intended to be a trivial claim).

Your video really proves that point with Waymond as an example, I just wish it had been framed as "here is an example of how an unchanging character can serve a story" (and "evolving the audience's perspective on them during the course of the story" isn't the only way it can work) and not "We all know everyone needs a character arc but WHAAT this guy doesn't have one let's explore this unbelievable, unpossible paradox".

A small detail I noticed that I absolutely loved was when alpha Waymond first meets with her in the closet, he forcefully grabs her and pulls her back and she sort of gives him a lustful look and pushes back her hair. We see her do it again when she realises she loves Waymond as he is, she gives him a more loving look and pushes her hair back.

I recognise a lot of myself in Waymond. I often play the fool, even if I'm stressed out, because it might make people laugh, even if it is sometimes for the wrong reasons. I know the latter to be true, because people have said to me, in my face, that I'm just a silly person that doesn't need to be listened to.
But much like Waymond, there's also a serious, sincere side to me that just gets overlooked, or doesn't come forward as often. And I'm not an idiot, I do think about what's going on and what happens around me, and I can get angry, not just at things that happen to me, but to others that I perceive as unjust.
And what I hate about myself is that I did fall in the trap of thinking Waymond was meek, in the beginning. Part of that is that I haven't exactly accepted this side of myself as legit.

There is really only one other character I can think of that embodies Waymonds world view in a similar way: Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. Even though that show has its own issues with its images of masculinity, Phil's character is always the one who stays true to his way of living, which is living life to the fullest, believing in every person no matter how they disappoint (Haley, Luke and even Claire) or reject him (Jay) and loving them all the same, making it his mission to enrich their lives in every way possible by being the kind, (literally) cheerleading personality in the family. I just love both of these characters and the way they are written so much.

Waymond’s instinct to be kind when he doesn’t know what’s going on, is a very inspiring message. There are so many times where a tragic news article is released and we don’t understand how the event happened. It’s so easy to fall into picking a side and attacking the opponent with preconceived biases. However, if we can offer some amount of empathy and kindness to the perpetrator, then we can take the first step in offering support.

Waymond is a character that means a lot to me because I am a man who finds it difficult to fight or be aggressive. It's not in my nature and I find it difficult and awkward to even try. I consider myself pretty empathetic and sensitive and these can be assets for me and for others, but it can also be difficult to actually enact the way Waymond does when things are tough or confusing. His point that kindness is always important, especially when you don't know what's going on, is one that spoke to me and is something I try really hard to remember when I get lost in frustration and confusion.
