In China...Patents are not really a thing that they pay attention to. So this could indeed be infringement but hard to prove. Hopefully they are able to license it from the other company if they are in for it.

For their disastrous video which was originally named “why you’re wrong about hookless wheels” and was basically an undeclared advert for Zipp, they got such a backlash that they changed the name of the video to “the pros and cons of hookless” (or something like that) and in the process, they lost a lot of trust from their viewers. This isn’t going to help with the perception that, when money talks, morals walk.

Let's be honest you don't need to talk about it. You could invest in productive uses of time rather than fueling drama for clicks.

No, nobody needs to talk about a company that makes shitty products. Don't buy their stuff, let the company go out of business as it deserves.

If I was GCN, I never would've gotten sponsored by Elite wheels. They are a Chinese brand that is known for making shit product in the past. Just like Ican and Superteam. Unless you wish to die while riding your bike, DO NOT BUY THESE PRODUCTS.

Most GCN videos are just 10 minute glorified ads and you could get the same information by reading the short press release about the product.

I think the issue here it, even if it’s patented, does it truly matter?
Most buyers buying this wheel, wouldn’t even bother buying from qvist anyway. Qvist wouldn’t gain a single sale from pushing this.

And paying to license it, would only drive up the cost of the wheel. Would the customer base would buy elite wheel, continue buying it if it went up past a certain point? No. So it makes 0 sense to license it

Shame on gcn for getting into bed with a chinese company that steals IP.
Chinese companies can't compete or innovation so they steal and imitate.

Chinese Bike industry are huge……. I’m not surprise they will take over the main stream brand as most of bike are made in China @ Taiwan…… European bila company cannot afford to make their bike in europe as the cost is high. The quality of chinese made bike is top notch … if not better!!

Elite wheels has Chinese patent. That would be 2billion people against European market. That is the game Chinese companies play, this is nothing new.

If patent makes a wheels more expensive to produce, i'd rather hope elite won the patent.

Unless qvist could do it in more affordable to mass produce, wich is unlikely in cycling world.

Being a guy who’s developing a fitness recovery tool, this stuff is hard. Really really really hard! Patents are the death of dreams and they’re unbelievably difficult to navigate. Especially when Chinese companies get involved.

A patent does not mean companies can't copy it. It only gives you a chair in the courtroom.

Patent pending gives zero legal rights to attempt to exclude someone from making, using or selling something you claim in the patent. A pending patent, at least in the US, gives zero legal standing to sue someone.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. While there are similarities in the systems there are also some distinct differences. In the Elite version one of the ratchet rings is fixed while in the other system all the ratchet parts are floating. The Elite version also uses a system similar to what Chris king has to pull the ratchet rings together under torque.

Sooo, when can we expect a new video about budget Road cycling? Chinese groupsets? Great budget hacks? That would be interesting to see! Let's leave GCN to do their thing, they are obviously more a commercial player and that's ok. I watch this channel for the more down-to-earth content.

After riding on a dtswiss ratchet system, not one time have I thought "a complete hub re-design would do these wheels much better." Even Elite's regular Drive hubs are awesome. My friend got some helix in and on the first descent the hub began to seize because of the weird spring interfacing with the double ratchets. We also noticed that the double ratchet slows you waaaaayyy down and quickly. I ride elite drive 40D and I wouldnt trade them for anything. They're incredible. I think elite tried to inovate to much, too quickly.

? Chinese companies don't have to adhere to US patent laws. only if they sell directly in the US. Hell, the Chinese gov' actively helps companies steal designs, trade secrets, etc.
