The sound is not working on this video for me for some reason, yet it does on all other videos, not sure if it is on my end or not but I don't know what would cause that on my end. It is obviously not muted lol

I find references a double edged sword. Sometimes they are incredibly handy, but other times it will ruin a mix by trying to overly match it.

One of the biggest issues I have is when clients come in and specifically want the exact same production as their favourite band, but they're using different gear, and are typically not as good musicians.

I try and encourage bands to develop their own unique sound which is in a ballpark of what they love, but some are stubborn and want a carbon copy, which is often not possible.

Great tips. And there are many more to add. My favorite is this one: Put an inert multiband plugin after your reference plugin, and solo different bands while referencing. Let's you check your bottom end against the reference, your low mids, high mids, treble etc.

Is the JST logo on your T super imposed after? Just watch and see what i mean.

Probably the worst advice i ever got as a beginner mixer was "pick a reference in a different genre than yours so everything stops sounding the same"

Maaaaaan, I checked my mute button, paused it, Checked my Bluetooth settings to make sure something didn’t pick it up, opened and closed my AirPods (cause sometimes it randomly connects). And for a brief but existential moment I thought maybe the government hacked my phone and they wanted to know how to better reference their mixes… you almost had me..👀😅

You totes got me. Where do people get mp3's from these days? I've been trying to have the reference playing in Spotify while tweaking my song in reaper, but this isn't really working for me. (I don't have CDs or a CD player any more, not even on my laptop.)

When choosing references I'll do a deep dive into the catalog of producers/engineers whose work I admire. That helps me to hone in on techniques and the general vibe those guys use and achieve. Guys like Max Norman, Chris Tsangarides, lately Andy Sneap for instance are some of my favorites, I'm sure everyone will have their own tastes.

Also, its worth noting that exposure to 80dB sound can start to negatively impact your hearing at around the 8 hour mark.
