Great video. Thanks for uploading it. I love the freedom and the flexibility which is afforded to independent scholars.

I love to learn and am no longer in school though I have two associates and a dual bachelors, but sometimes I think going back to school for language would be fun. But I don’t feel the need for it, I just would like the structured setting and social aspect paired with what I’ve learned from self study. It’s not a priority though and I’ll keep learning no matter where I am.

I would say that I agree generally with your points here, but I don't think that necessarily translates to being an "independent scholar". In my mind, the mark of a scholar is their ability to engage in knowledge production, and upon developing skills in research and inquiry, to produce novel work. Teaching and keeping abreast with the current state of a field are certainly a part of that role, but especially as one goes into graduate school, they are of less importance than being a capable researcher. This is not necessarily impossible to do outside the university setting (depending on what field you're in), but gaining a level of knowledge and ability such that you can conduct original research and contribute to the body of scholarship on your area of interest usually requires some exposure to an academic system.

One of the challenges with learning outside of an academic institution, grading aside, is that you don't have anyone who is knowledgeable enough in the subject to really review and critique/correct your work. This is an essential component of learning mathematics, my field of study.

I agree to some extent but most of the validity of a degree is not about knowledge, but rather a "proof" of consistency. It is showing future employers that you are reliable over time, that you can set a goal to yourself for an extended period of time and actually make it.
Especially in the era of Internet, Universities are now less and less knowledge driven and more about connections and experience.

I am doing a PhD but I like the idea of being independent. I would like to pursue it if it seems financially viable for me. How do you make a living as an independent scholar?

Too much misinformation online to be a serious independent researcher..its much better to learn from trusted sources that you'll find in university. Also it's too boring to research alone

Universities are spawning grounds for socialism and left wing ideology. Their latest focus is on the outlawing of free speech and open debate. At the end of the day universities are dinosaurs from a bygone age and they lumber their unfortunate students with crippling debt before they go out to look for work in the real world.

The internet has made it easier to pursue independent scholarship. The university exists to perform research, teach, and certify. The internet has made it possible for students to learn and take certifying exams on-line. Yet, many colleges and universities also have a mission to instill a set of values and develop a certain kind of character. Can that be done on-line? Also, many subjects require hands-on learning and research experience using expensive equipment. Ex. Science and engineering, even music. Historically, those were provided by universities. Can most independent scholars afford such equipment?

Отличное видео! Главное - это знания. Ученая степень не всегда требуется.
Excellent video! Knowledge is the goal. The degree is not always required.
