Some Samsung phones also use optical scanner. It would be interesting to compare these just to prove optical is really faster even from the same company.

Interesting video. It seems like the optical sensors all require to a) manually wake up the screen first and then b) click the sensor to unlock the screen (2 manual steps). Only the ultrasonic sensor seems to resolve this. Here only one manual step is required (as with a conventional physical fingerprint sensor). Does anybody know which phones besides Samsung have a fingerprint sensor under the screen that responds by one manual step?

Was using Note10+ and now a S20+. Samsung's fp sensor is HORRIBLE! Every now and then you press 5 times and it still refused to unlock and I had to use the pattern instead. Last time I will be buying a Samsung phone considering I have been using a Samsung Note phone since Note 2

Ultra sonic is 3d while optical is 2d.....the ultra sonic maps the fingers and grooves with sound which is why it's slower ......the optical uses light to match the image on file which is why it's faster.....basically light vs sound....and light is always faster

Am I the only one who hates that the optical sensors light up so much in low light low screen brightness conditions? For instance when you're checking your phone in bed? And also I hate the fact that you have to turn on the screen first before the optical sensor works. Please bring back the good old fingerprint sensor in high end phones!

Just got my note 10+ today and damn the fingerprint sensor is slow. No way near the speed of the old note 9's non in-display sensor. I didn't expect it to be this slower.

Samsung S10 and A70 scanner is garbage. It is slow.and it fails multiple times. Ultrasound is a disgrace.

It was really interesting. I didn't know exactly the differences between the scanners and I wanted to learn. But this test is only to see which one is faster and reliable under certain conditions, but which one is actually more secure? I don't really care about the half a second delay on the samsung phones.

U dipshit optical scanners are way worse and insecure...its 2d...idc about speed...but ths 10's scanner is way better and secure...which is more important than speed

What's the best way to tell how secure they are? Optical sensors are clearly faster, but they could just be letting more touches through with less accuracy...

You are using s10 scanner in wrong way just tap on the screen and u will be amazed by its speed try it.

You have to with Samsung register either with or without a protective cover. I have both OnePlus 7 pro an S10 plus, S10 plus just a split second slower every now and then however S10 always with wet dirty fingers

I think you're missing the point about the main difference between optical and ultrasonic fingerprint scanners. The biggest difference isn't the .1 second variation in recognition time, but the exponential increase in security an ultrasonic fingerprint reader provides over the insecure optical variant. This can easily be demonstrated in the example below.

All one needs to spoof an optical fingerprint sensor is your two dimensional fingerprint. This can be found and obtained from literally almost everything you touch, and a 2d mold can be created easily from your discovered print that will trick an optical reader. However, in order to spoof an ultrasonic fingerprint reader, one would need to obtain a 3 dimensional fingerprint - including the depth of fingerprint ridges, location of and depth of sweat pores, even the location, volume, and width of blood capillaries in your finger. Needless to say, this is much, much harder to duplicate.

I have the Huawei mate 20 Pro and the finger print scanner is terrible compared to the mate 10s rear scanner. I just use face unlock now.

The main benefit of ultrasonic is that it can work with the display off and it works under intense sunlight. The optical scanner has to be tapped to light up to activate and under direct sunlight it would probably struggle, if it even works.

so what good are these scanners if you live or work say in a cold area or rugged conditions where you have to wear gloves. Maybe you have those gloves that work with touch screens but is this scanner going to work with people that have to wear gloves?
or are these scanners a fad, over rated?

The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is slower on the forever screen, its alot faster when the phone is awake or when the phone is dark

One uses light (optical) & the other uses sound(ultrasonic) . ...so pressing your thumb hard against something that literally uses sound or vibrations to map out your thumb print is just counter productive. Light on the other hand will work because all it needs to do is just illuminate your thumb print & you're in.

In my opinion optical is better. I've had the 6t and the s10+. 6t worked almost every time! S10+ almost never works. Idk why they waited so long to use an inferior technology.
