DevTips Starter Kit

Why use your starter kit over something like Boilerplate for example? I'm really new to this stuff and still figuring out. Is Boilerplate just too advanced?

Is Prepros similar to CodeKIt?

I couldn't get it how you create a new Jekyll with your DevTips Starter Kit... I mean, should I just delete all inside the folder of my website after I create a "Jekyll new"?

I have no idea what's happening anymore. This is crazy advanced stuff, so many words I don't understand, programs that scare me. I just wanted to learn how to build a neat website.. . I'll come back when I have a better understanding of css and html, at least.

Love the starter kit, Travis! I've been playing around with it for hours but I can't get any of the sass I write to compile. Everything works/looks great out of the box and I see the styling you put in, but when I change the color variables, save, and run jekyll serve, nothing changes. It's not just the color variables: my changes don't show up when I change anything or add to the _base.sass file. When I look at the main.css file, all of the default styling you put in is still there, even the stuff I deleted from the sass files. Then I tried deleting all the contents of main.css and running jekyll serve again to see how it would compile, but the css file just remained empty. I thought that sass was supposed to make the css file when I ran jekyll serve, but maybe I don't understand it correctly? I didn't change any of the includes, so those should all be working.

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it. I just don't know what to do!

do we need to create a separate folder in the project for the includes? like where we create the separate sections of the page like header.html, footer.html or we put all of them together with the .sass in the pages/modules folders?


or the {% include something %} is just sth that jekyll uses and won't work anywhere else?

ah cool that bourbon just gives you the mixin tools that only impact your code if you call them. I sppose you could use bourbon with bootstrap/foundation just as effectively as neat?

Anyway what about flexbox, is that an inherent css3 thing? or is flexbox injected with bourbon/neat?

Help! .sass does not compile to .css in my Espresso. How to fix it?

Just noticed this will be extremly hard to follow on a windows pc, since ruby etc is a pain in the ass for windows, hence jekyll will be a pain in the ass :P

why in the starter kit there are no xxxxxxx-index.scss files???

this video doesn't match the DEVKIT structure. I bet I need to use this video to help but use the KIT as the most recent version

So you don't use jekyll anymore on the tutorial?

I get an conversion error in Jekyll if i include --- --- at to top of the sass file. If I don't do so, the changes(like making the background pink) are not reflected. What am i doing wrong?

If you run Mac, it takes about 2 minutes to set up the local server.....
