From my understanding the 8dbi antenna from RAk is an Omnidirectional antenna which means (I think) the antenna shoots out the signal in a 360 degree horizontal plane. This is perfect if you live out in the suburbs where there are not too many buildings.

I'm thinking of getting the bobcat , I believe i read the stock antenna reaches 10+ miles and the closest hotspots to me are about 3 miles. I live in the suburbs of Chicago in a ranch style home and my neighborhood has a lot of trees . I'm not sure if putting the antenna in my window will get me connected to those hotspots but I will try it first . If it doesn't work should I get the 8dbi upgrade and mount it on my roof ?

Hello is it possible to find out who owns a hotspot ?

If anyone can help...Anyone know where is a safe place to buy an 8dbi outdoor antenna? I was recommended to get a laird 8dbi and a lmr400 coax cable, since i will be putting my antenna high above my house. Most of the surrounding hotspots in my area are in the same general direction, and ranging 10-40 miles from my house. My area is also somewhat hilly and has many tall trees. Another question is if I should go higher than 8dbi? Also should I go omni directional or directional?, I saw on the RAK website they have a new 12dBi Directional Antenna, anyone use this one yet, or would it be better for my to try the 8 first? What if you just get a higher dbi but it's Omnidirectional instead of directional.

How much higher are they? With 15deg elevation beam width you should be able to pick up signals quite much higher than you are at longer distances….

Just a thought might be a dumb question can you get 10 9dbi antennas and make a 360 with them ?
