For LTCG, does the stock have to be held for 365+ days?

Or does it apply even if I buy on 30 March and sell on 2 April? The calendar year is the same but the FY has changed.

tax harvesting is a fancy term ....actually, the tax to be paid is just postponed for the coming year....tax harvesting is for those whose is in the stock market for a short period of time and for small gain....if anyone wants to be in the stock market and have the chance to have some significant gains then this stock tax harvesting is increasing your tax amount by nearly 50% ...yes you heard it correctly it just increase your tax amount by 50%.

I began my investment journey at the age of 38, primarily through hard work and dedication. Now at the age of 40, I am thrilled to share that my passive income exceeded $100k in a single month for the first time. This success reinforces the importance of the advice mentioned earlier. It is not about achieving quick wealth, but rather ensuring long-term financial prosperity

In US you can carry forward capital loss indefinitely and you can use that to reduce the ordinary income upto $3000!
In Canada, you can even carry backward capital loss upto 3yrs and forward indefinitely!
I am not sure that it is the same case if you are buying US stocks from India!
Because for me long term is one year when buying US stocks unlike if you are buying from India(2 yrs).

On part 1 - the calculations shown in the video do not factor in the transaction charges of exiting and entering the trade. In today's date for stock transactions they easily eat up 30% of the profits. So need to bake those charges in before deciding on benefits of Tax Harvesting!

Ответить
Shirish
Shirish - 07.08.2023 06:25

On part 2 - I am not sure how this is beneficial as if you book loss and use that to save tax this FY then the next FY when you book profit on the re-bought loss transaction the profits will show higher so you end up paying more tax on the new re-bought transaction. Besides you end up paying the transactional charges extra. So it creates more problems then solves any.

Are bhai, excel sheet is not everything. The government takes a lot of taxes in various names for buying and selling and also broker charges, eventhough less compared to government taxes, so tax loss harvesitng is not a plain excel sheet calculation that you are showing

Is 1 lakh exemption applicable to all (including a person in 30% tax slab)?? In few articles I have read that you have to pay tax as per your tax slab. Please clarify. I am sharing the example below:

Mr. Ash has taxable salary of INR 4 lakh and income from other sources (interest on FD and savings account) of INR 80k. Mr. Ash is smart. He knows that he pays no tax if his income is less than INR 5 lakh. His friend told him that he can book LTCG of upto INR 1 lakh and pay no tax on this too. Since it is “exempt income”. He went ahead and sold his index fund and booked a profit of INR 1 lakh.

This is where tax planning goes for a toss.

Mr. Ash’s taxable income will be calculated as under:

INR

Taxable Salary
4,00,000.0

Other Sources
80,000.0

LTCG on Equity
1,00,000.0

5,80,000.0

Notice that his total income has exceeded INR 5 lakh. This means he will not get the rebate under Section 87A.

Here’s how his tax will be calculated:

Tax on LTCG at 0% - 0

Tax on other Income (Slab rates) - 11,500

@warikoo first of all great video sir.
I have a query sir.
Say my income crossed 1lakh and I wasn't tracking it .
And it's 1 lakh 10k to be exact at the moment.
So shall I do tax harvesting now ? Or wait for my profit to go down under 1 lakh ?
Or sell now as my negative stocks are worth 30k aproxx
May be from there short term loss and gain will be set off ?
Just for your reference
My total gain- 1 lakh 10k
Unrealized loss- 30k
Now guide me

🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Mutual fund upto 1 lakh, no tax
Also says if sold before one year, 15% tax... is this tax on earning below 1 lakh too. Say ₹50k in nine months. If sold before one year, tax liability applies? (7500, 15%)
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🙏🙏🙏🙏
Am in confusion. Please help.
Mutual fund sold before one year, 15% tax liability on any appreciating amount?

Hi Ankur, your videos are great. I want to add something to this video. Someone might point this out already.

For the USA you want to check out the “Wash sale rule”. According to this if you immediately buy your stock you cannot claim that loss for tax savings. You have to wait for at least 30 days.
