Brighton Beach in New York City is also known as Little Odessa -- with a massive Russian-speaking population from all the post-Soviet countries, this neighborhood is super unique! Having lived in Ukraine, Georgia, and Russia, I was really interested to how Brighton Beach would compare to the 'motherlands.' We went to a restaurant featuring all the best cuisine from the post-Soviet countries, stepped into a grocery store selling the same things I can find in my Kyiv grocery stores, and perused a book shop filled with Russian and Ukrainian books and gifts -- *and* my parents tried kvass for the first time! It was super interesting to be in my hometown of New York but be surrounded by Russian on the streets. I got to practice my own Russian skills a bit too! I highly recommend a visit to New York's Little Odessa.
