Why we left our life in the UK to move to France and start a homestead

Id love a French farmhouse with a big fireplace it would be grate id sleep like a log and wake up in the fireplace also grate and try the lovely French cheeses in slices but not so grated lol

I'm curious to know how Brexit has changed things for you. I live in Belgium, and know a few British who have had to become Belgian nationals(can keep UK) in order to stay in the EU. And have heard stories of British who lived in Spain that have had to sell and move back to the UK. How does this work out for you? Thanks

Great to be back in the EU. A lot of people must be considering this move to France as an option. You are free to innovate in France in away that is not possible in UK. Any thought of a business in Scotland, which is full of red tape and taxes, stops any inspirational development.

My wife and I did this 13 years ago. Then, after 30 years of marriage, she suddenly left me. And the whole stack of cards came tumbling down! 😢

I had to sell the house in France and now I’m back in the UK (where I don’t want to be!), trying to sell the excess furniture left over from France and constantly looking a French property websites with a view to going back on my own for good because I’m an EU citizen.

How much did you spend on renovating the house as a percentage of the original house price?...For example 25%. It's easy to buy a bargain but the costs of renovating can be very expensive that can prohibit many people.

A really lovely Vlog. Thank you ! We have a little house near Limoges and I hope to get there soon. I had no idea "Homesteading" was so chic!
We moved to Texas many years ago and because of the history of 'Go west, young man" we pay fewer taxes on our house because we have a 'homestead' (if it is ones only house) . Very quaint, but a lot of people do really homestead and their books and blogs are full of good information. "Becky's Homestead " site is good and very informative about chickens , she is in Florida. 'Self Sufficient Me ' is in Australia, he is excellent on raised beds. Both are well worth following.
The three years of Covid have coincided with my husband's declining health and so even my greenhouses (plastic!) are neglected. Hopefully after we return from an upcoming trip to France I can replant before the intense heat ruins everything. Thanks again for a really sincere vlog. Love that you have two babes ! Congratulations! We, especially France, need all the children we can get !

Very inspirational I am South African living in South Africa with my french wife and two boys, my wife is from the Loire valley originally ...do you know where I can find an unused rural farm to restore for us...regards Russell which will hopefully be affordable on South African rand ha ha

It looks like a great find. Ours was far worse. Live in Missouri USA. Ours was rock too with a bad layout.

You don't need to master basic French. You need administrative French, mainly tax related. Unless you hire an accountant.😂 Bienvenue en France.

Your vlog just turned up and I was fascinated with it. I wish you lots of luck. We lived in France for almost 9 years, trying to renovate a property but because my husband was an electrician, to make a living he was working pretty much 7 days a week and eventually his back was injured and we had no way of surviving and finishing the property so we had to return. I still regard France as home and I miss it every day, my friends I made, all French, I still keep in touch with, and I would jump at the opportunity to return but its unlikely to happen unless we won the lottery.

I have just found you both - wonderful to hear how you have immersed yourselves and taken plunge into the french lifestyle.. I love your steady ethos and values - homesteading is a great idea - good socialization too fro the children. having had lodgers it can work really well when you have the space.. mine are all pretty much grown and i led a somewhat UK conventional lifestyle.. but now I'm considering doing something different as feel the need to be self sufficient or have people stay and skill swap. ..not sure where as yet. But France and Portugal beckon as its so much more affordable than the UK - as you say house and land (and its the land I'm always very interested in) is pretty nigh impossible here. Thanks for your lovely documentation of your journey so far.. fascinating and motivating! Hope you have since managed to get the odd day out! i will get onto the other vids. All best wishes to you.

As an American who lived in northern Uk for three years, I definitely would choose rural France. I have a general idea of where you are. Good choice. Like the way everyone in those small towns says hello. I love the food and French country kitchen design. The relaxed artsy flavor of those areas appeals to me, with their weekly market days.
