Why visual effects artists love this shiny ball

oh yeah, cubemaps! i first learned about this technology from source games, as cubemaps are frequently used there. it does have an important limitation however, it only looks good from one angle, so its best only used on smaller objects, as if you added cubemaps for every point a player could view something from it would make the file size enormous

you didn't tell me how to unwrap the sphere image to a cube map or a panoramic format...
