The statistics state that civilians shooting only have a 2% chance of injuring innocent bystanders, while the police officers shooting have an 11% chance. There's also roughly 100 million gun owners in the US and with this panic buying, most people who wanted guns already bought them. Driver's licenses are also made so that 99% of the population can obtain one, and despite the serious death roads numbers we don't see the majority of people misusing their heavy and fast machines of death.

Further, our own Govt moved thousands of full auto AKs into the hands of criminals the last 5yrs, Operations Wide Receiver and Fast & Furious, under AG Eric Holder. That put more AKs into criminal hands than ever was the case through legal gun sales. Finally, we could put two guards into every K-12 school in the USA for less than one month of QE3.

The NRA ship is turning towards the mainstream of firearms owners. Elections are just around the corner, and I can tell you that the ballot is stacked with some level-headed and highly intelligent motivated individuals, with experience in LEO and otherwise. No more blow ups on national TV.

When our own government is arming criminals with thousands of fully-automatic AK-47s in botched sting operations like Wide Receiver and Fast & Furious, it makes perfect sense to me. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight, and don't bring a pistol when the known and armed criminal has a battle rifle. We could start to solve the problem by 1) enforcing laws on the books and 2) not releasing violent offenders back into society when recidivism rates are through the roof.
