"RISC architecture is going to change everything" 1995. Its amazing how fast this actually is, this would not be possible 10 years ago. Has anyone built a dragonfly imagine?

Is connecting the fiddly antenna necessary? Will it damage the board, if we don't connect it?

Great video! Did you notice in your tests whether this board has a low power or sleep mode? It would be useful to wake it up with a microcontroller without having to go through the complete boot process for certain things.

Armbian is running a lot better now than it was in March 2023. I got it to boot to desktop with xkde but graphics operations were measured in minutes. This almost looks like a 386 which is mostly rendering things in a reasonable amount of time.

The rate of development is going to EXPLODE by orders of magnitude compared to x86 and ARM which are already mature... The cost, simplicity and open nature make RISC V a better future proof platform for the masses. I expect China will lead the way in development so expect trillions in investment as they are being forced to do so geopolitically.

While the advancements in RISC-V are certainly exciting, it's crucial that manufacturers feel motivated to provide robust driver support. Based on my research, it seems FTDI currently doesn't offer support for RISC-V, limiting it to x86, x64, ARM, and MIPS32 (as per AN_220). Recent Ubuntu releases that I've used all natively support FTDI without any additional installation required. I'm genuinely curious if Chris's successful Ubuntu server installation included any inherent kernel or distribution support for such devices.

As more developers get involved, the optimisations for RISC-V and its associated graphics drivers will yield better results. I expect that future revisions of the hardware will also increase performance. These early RISC-V boards are important in starting the process whereby the platform improves over time.

Thanks for your great and clear reviews! I love them. If I may suggest a very interesting retro-like tiny computer/ Memory Operating System: The AGON light: New open source 8-bit System. A very compact open-source system using a modern Z80 variant, an ESP32 chip and 512kb of static RAM running MOS and BBC basic very fast. Even boasting a GPIO header for interfacing to external electronics. Would like you to review this one, I think you'll love it.

Very nice little thingy, but still way far from useability for everyday micro-desktop use.
They are barely useable for ultra-low cost development use, and also in this case, spending not much more, you can afford much powerful SoC's, isn't it?

Thank you Chris for making us know all about those very interesting devices! ❤

I‘d be interested in its camera interface.
Most of them have one and I consider it underrepresented and underanalysed.
Some have proprietary camera modules.
Some others.

Thank you

The D1 (I think it's called) also has a fairly chunky DSP copro which you can run one of the lightweight tensorflow flavours on!
And hardware codecs for video, so it's probably just a support problem for video playback (Linux Vs video hardware, the eternal battle continues)

How did Windows 95 render low fidelity video? I remember late DOS games and early Win95 games playing 160x120 256 colors or maybe even 320x240 256 colors during fmvs/cutscenes. I also remember streaming Limp Bizkit music videos from their website. They had an option to stream @ "28.8 quality" (just 3.5 kilobytes per second). I had a 166 MHz cpu with mmx extensions in that rig. How was any of this possible? Those early dabblings into video compression and video rendering were astounding at the time.

Hi Chris, thanks to your video I bought a Mango Pi MQ-Pro, which arrived from China to the Netherlands in about a week, nice.
However, I have problem booting it, so much so that I was under the impression my MangoPi was faulty. Only with the image on their own site, with xfce desktop, I was able to boot it, so it works, but the video is a bit flaky. The Ubuntu server image I tried did nothing at all. Which image did you use to boot Ubuntu server (with link please). I bought it so I can have a stab at RISC-V assembler language on the actual hardware, which is a bit different from my 80s old and rusty Z80 assembler skills, just for fun.
Thanks in advance,
Albert
