I think the pattern per track is brilliant, it gives you lots of combination possibilities in song mode. With other sequencers, if you only want to change a single track, you need a completely new pattern for all tracks. As far as I understand correctly, this is a unique selling point of the syntrak.

will a native instruments m32 works as controller?

You can't play samples as an instrument/chromaticly?. That's a proper dealbreaker. No keyzones, no splits/layers = half of the usability gone. Even if future FW-updates MAY fix that.

I first hoped it could work as a live unit to bring/play sampled vst's or hardware synths to build a minimalistic rig. That combined with its synthcapabilities would have been a killer combo. At current state, a good ipad will do a much better job.

great video! What a dizzying collection of nice features and capabilities… but almost all of these are bizarrely offset by so so many barriers, limitations, or omissions. A lot of memorization, which is workable if used every day. But… if not? YT ‘Midlife synthesist’s’ 3 criteria for usability will bite you on this one—especially the ‘Return to play after a short absence’. Intriguing device but I’d wait for V. 2….

just put a screen on it. how much could that possibly cost per unit? we dont need a huge speaker and if i wanted to use my phone or computer for music making, i wouldnt need a groovebox

Thanks for the review. Well presented as always. This unit is, however, a hard pass for me. Looking for something that's able to knock out the MPC Live II or Maschine+. Seems like I'll be waiting for quite some time.

Seems easier just to use something with a screen and menus. The idea of tactile immediacy is just an illusion. I preordered to play with but I’m thinking I may regret trying to use it.

Hi, can I ask if the Seqtrak can be controlled via external MIDI and if so, how? The manual doesn't cover it nor do any of the many videos I have watched.

The lack of full synth editor and lack of polyphonic sample playback are the things that make this a no for me.

No piece of kit (including this Seqtrak) in this digital era that we all live in, will ever convince me to memorize it's functions, when display screens of all types and sizes are cheap and common place.

I don't know why, I like Yamaha equipment, but every time I see it the first thing in my mind is 'messy'. Sounds good though. Groove box wise I'd go for the KO II or a Syntakt although that last one is just so damn expensive.

Thanks loopop. Great sketching tool. I’ve been thinking, I recently acquired a Vermona Perfourmer and I’m familiar with it but there hardly no review of that incredible analog synth. If you would review it that will definitely bring lots of value to the community that owns that synth. Personally, I’ve owned so many analog synths over the years including a Buchla Easle at one point and got to say this the best analog synth I’ve ever used.

At its current price, it seems like really good value. But something kept niggling at me, which ironically became exaggerated further when i saw that someone is already selling a unit on ebay at an even further reduced price as of today.

With all the devices you've listed, they're all available AND at discounts both new and second hand, firther narrowing the 'bang for the buck' gap. Other than this and the OP-Z , the rest don't really require a tablet or phone, etc (and maybe a velocity / aftertouch sensitive controller), to get the best out of them. Bearing that in mind, maybe a tablet and app combo is the real competition. And if you already own a tablet, you'll save even more just going the app route with a controller.

I feel yamaha could have added a bit more to this, and made it 100 to 200 pounds/euros pricier, but a truer all in one 'must buy'.

As it is, it's got a great sounding set of sonic engines, which are hampered by an interface that i suspect could have been so much easier to engage with, if it had its own screen. Having some kind of velocity /pad style input device (e.g. rubber pads etc) could have further sweetened the deal.

Here's hoping Yamaha make something more complete like an RM1X (still have & use mine. There's
Lots of tricks & facilities available when using the sequencer) or a fuller all in one like the RS7000.

Can’t help but think that a small LED display would have been better than a tinny speaker but looks great otherwise.

IMO, looks cool but not enough to remplace something in that range of groove box. Secondhand Digitakt, opz, PO2 and circuit can do near better for cheap 😊

Hey @loopop, this may be outside of the scope of your channel, but are there other alternatives out there to the visualizer in this groovebox? Does the on-board visualizer repond to the audio in port?

do you have a problem with the bottom left key in the synth section?

As sick as it is - with all of the hidden functionality this may as well be a midi controller for the Yamaha seqtrak app lmao
