Day 1 of The FTC vs Microsoft Trial Was Insane

As a ps fan who never really looked that deep into the business stuff of gaming I’m glad Microsoft is winning. I’m now on pc since 2020 and that’s when my eye opening began to how corrupt Sony was.

This whole Microsoft line about making more games available to more people on more platforms, I don't buy it. It's not that there is a problem with game pass the problem is if Microsoft buys your favourite studio there is a one in four chance that studio will close. How on earth is that bringing more games to more people? Microsoft should build a great service (gamepass) but they shouldn't buy studios. By contrast Sony's first party studios are thriving, they have produced multiple award-winning titles.

Destin, I think that''s a bit of a short sighted view that Jim Ryan was lying bold faced based on this email. I think that it is entirely possible that in the first days after this deal was announced, and based on Playstation's current hold on the market he may not have thought this was a big deal. But in the days/weeks/months proceeding the analysts on the PS side of things may have changed course. Even if today or tomorrow it doesn't make much sense to take COD off PS think to a future where XBOX is able to get their pipeline in order and start delivering high calibre games at a decent clip. These games are then available day 1 for a $15/20/25 subscription while PS is still charging $70 a pop. Then say PS5's investment in live service games doesn't pan out and they have a series of misses with their first party studios. Now XBOX is able to reduce PS5's market share, maybe in 10 years we are looking at a PS with a significant reduction in market share. NOW XBOX/MS is looking at taking COD off their console is a much bigger deal. I'm sure that Jim Ryan/PS would rather not have MS/XBOX in a position where this is an option. Why would they want to roll over and give MS/XBOX this power without a fight?

Don't get me wrong, I think this FTC case is ridiculous, but Jim Ryan trying to advocate for a stronger position is not wrong. I'm floored that the FTC is trying to stop the distant third place in this market from gaining ground and becoming more competitive. I'm sure that XBOX/MS has had many conversations about pulling out of this market. I think it would be terrible for consumers if XBOX/MS left the industry and if they can't become more competitive they may decide abandoning XBOX is the way to go.

I think both XBOX and PS5 are lying and twisting the truth to their advantage, but the FTC should be unbiased and they are coming off as trying to secure PS5's dominant hold on the market.

To get a comparable experience on starfield, youll need a $1500 PC though.

A min spec means potentially 720p, 30 fps all minimum settings. XSX is likely going to run high settings, 1440p native upscaled to 4K. Youll need a beefy PC to do that

Something that isn't talked about enough is that people aren't typically just "dropping" $1000 + on a new gaming PC. They are periodically (every few years, if that) dropping a couple hundred here and there to upgrade an already existing PC. People act like every time a new game is released all us PC gamers toss out our old PC's and buy the biggest baddest rig to replace it. That's not typically how that works.

Those PC builds for less than 1k are not putting out 4k. I really hate this misinformation. A 4k monitor alone is $500 unless you hunt for one around $400. This is before you build the PC.

I’m sorry, but high performance gaming PCs are things that people spend a lot of money on. There’s no ceiling to the cost associated with gaming PCs, you can spend as much money as you can to eek out every last bit of performance, and then next year you can do it all over again. I know that not everyone does this, but when looking at $ spent on hardware between a PC and a console gamer in the same decade, I would argue that in the majority of cases where the PC is able to play the same games as the console, that the PC player will spend much more money on keeping their PC relevant and functional than a console player, and that would even account for a console player buying the new gen console when it comes out.

Sony's 3M content subs, couldnt that be the actial "content" tiers of PS+ Extra & Premium? Those are the ones that compare directly to gamepass.

As a PS user I’m happy for Xbox acquiring these studios but Jim Ryan is doing his job, it’s a business first of all and downplaying the competition is a must.

This argument about "a japanese company vs an anerican company" is straight up xhenephobic. Its not part of the FTC's concern. The FTC is meant to ensure FAIR competition which means a trillion dollar conpany coning in and buying up the market.

Microsoft if this is about nobile were given the option by the cma to buy king and leave the rest and they declined todo so- if it were so important they'd have just done that.

It's just sad to see what Xbox is doing. Can't produce any quality games, so we'll just buy popular publishers and make them exclusive.
