The draw of games like RAID is they QUANTIFY progress (champ level, dungeon level, gear level, etc, etc, etc). It's a literal skinner box, push the button and get your treat, but it's one that gives us hard numbers to represent our accomplishments. It's the same reason why so many people become so fixated on money and wealth. It's a quantitative measure of "how good I'm doing", rather than more abstract qualitative measures like health and happiness that tend to take a back seat because they are more difficult to measure.
