What’s the definition of a dress watch?
ОтветитьI'm really surprised if there's people that would call a diver a dress watch. My PRX can dress up but I wouldn't call it a dress watch. What I consider a dress is something that's subtle but there.
ОтветитьThe watch im working towards right now is the JLC Reverso Small seconds. And I look forward to wearing it in jeans and a T shirt💯
ОтветитьI wish they make dress watches with screw crown. I only buy watches that are water resistant.
ОтветитьEVERY COLLECTION should contain at least one dress watch. Wearing a big "sports watch "with a suit/tux is just wrong, regardless of what some may think.
ОтветитьI intend to buy one though nothing expensive as I rarely dress up
ОтветитьAgreed. Society has become way too casual and I pray things will change for the better. All we can do is to raise our kids right and to live by example!
ОтветитьPlease do a video and attainable dress watches maybe up to 4k
ОтветитьYou say that watches should be an expression of individuality and not about getting the attention of others, but contradict yourself by saying in many of your videos that this or that watch will "catch the attention" of someone "across the room" or "get respect" etc. So which is it? Do you care about what others think and are fishing for compliments, or are you truly picking for yourself instead?
ОтветитьWell said Teddy / Crew! I just subscribed, and the production of these videos are just awesome! I love all the life advice thrown in there.
ОтветитьI wholeheartedly agree with this. Great Video again Teddy.
ОтветитьInteresting opinions but I completely disagree, sports watches are more versatile than dress watches you simply can't state otherwise. You see many people wearing sports watches with suits and it looks completely normal, however, you'd cringe if you saw somebody wearing a reverso with a tracksuit, it just isn't right.
ОтветитьI agree with you. A good dress watch is an important addition to a man's wardrobe and is the most versatile. Given today's proliferation of tech watches, such as the Apple Watch, and Garmin's array of choices, a dress watch is essential. I can't imagine wearing a tech watch with a tuxedo to a formal event. I would, however, feel perfectly comfortable wearing a dress watch with jeans or shorts.
ОтветитьI still have some nice watches - created by famous brands - left in my drawer, but I never wear those accessories, not even for gala dinners or business meetings - Since more than 20 years! This is old fashioned stuff to me and I don't get the hype around this - meanwhile obsolete - toy! But I watched some clips to understand, if there is some magic behind it, but finally it seems to be just ego polishing or some kind of investment...!? D/A/G
ОтветитьAbsolutely great video. IMO, point 4 is spot on. It seems people now just want to flex their watches, trying to gather as much attention as they can. But for me, the whole idea of buying a watch is self-expression, showing who you are, what you like. Point 4 goes beyond watches, it's kinda life advice thing. Congrats, Teddy, from a Brazilian fan
ОтветитьBang on! Again!
ОтветитьI have only dress watches 90% of them pre 70’s because they have a different vibe than modern pieces and finesse . I’m not a diver a pilot pr whatever so I only wear dress watches to look sleek and tell the time .
ОтветитьI wear my gold dress watch with a sport suit.
ОтветитьSo tired of the dive watch aesthetic (Submariner, Black Bay etc.) I’m wearing G-Shocks for sports or work and even a Timex Weekender with the awesome Indiglow feature for around the house. For everything else I prefer more unique dress watches. My favorites are vintage dress watches from the 1940s through the 1950s. Can’t beat a pie-pan Omega Constellation!
ОтветитьI usually add a strap to my sinn or oris rather than the bracelet. My current favorite is a seiko 5 with a dark leather strap. Just dressy enough for me.
ОтветитьI just purchased my first higher tier watch as a student: A Longines Flagship Heritage! From my point of view there's nothing more groundbreaking than wearing a classy dress watch in a world dominated by smartwatches and bulky, blingy sport watches. Now I'm thinking about pairing it up with a milanese strap :)
ОтветитьYour points are well taken..my wife and I are going to church in a few hours...we both are going to be properly dressed and wearing a dress watch completes the look..peace
ОтветитьI have absolutely no need for a dress watch as I'd wear my speedmaster but having said that, I would love to own a junghans as they are simple time pieces and completely different to my collection 👍🏻
ОтветитьFor a long time my go to was a dive watch. The last few years I've started to buy more watches, and with that has come diversification. I wear suits for work some of the time so it just made sense to add a few dress watches, nothing crazily expensive. But I've bought a few with different styles and dial colours to work with my shirts and suits. I've wanted a Reverso for years, but for now I see my next dress watch being a Cartier Tank. Such a classic design.
ОтветитьI think if you already own a dress watch, great. But specifically the past couple years, hard pressed to have someone go and spend their money that's harder to come by and harder earned to buy a watch they rarely NEED. Much more easy to dress up a watch for a nice occasion. Maybe when the economy is better things will change. But not the way things are looking.
Keep your every day watch and throw a leather strap or a nice bracelet if you need something more fancy. Don't buy a dress watch if you don't own one right now.
To be completely honest i gotta disagree on the Cartier vs patek point. In my personal opinion i see the tank as more of a retro revivalist kinda look where as the nautilus is much more retro-futurist. I feel like regardless of whether it was the 1960s, 2060 or 2160 the nautilus would fit in. I might be wrong tho lolll
ОтветитьI like CLASSIC dress watches. But nit NEW obes. i cant stamd dress watches in general though..noone wants a dress watch in 2023. buy a sports watch unless, You really are rich. i saw a guy buy a cartier and it was so cringe. y not buy a grand seiko? their the best watches ever. for all occasions.
ОтветитьJust as a small side question how many people who spend a small fortune on a dive watch actually take it anywhere near 300 meters down under since a quick study of diving will soon alert you to the fact that your watch is more likely to survive than you are. In fact you will need serious help getting to that depth ie a small submersible. So now we know theses people are just posers. As for the dress watch well living in today’s society you will perhaps be aware of a small cost of living thing that is effectively stopping NORMAL people from eating heating or just paying their mortgage. But hey if I could afford a Rolex dive or any other decent luxury dress watch I wouldn’t really care about the cost of living would I. Just a thought from a dress watch wanabe
ОтветитьA dress watch is just so much more versatile than any other style of watch. There are an innumerable amount of beautiful looking watches but wearing anything but a dress watch just looks like a mismatch. It's like trying to wear your favorite pair of sneakers with every outfit, sometimes good and sometimes out of place. A dress watch on the other hand blends into nearly any outfit.
ОтветитьWhile I'm over here with almost only dress watches. But to each their own
ОтветитьThanks for the video. First and foremost, the criterion for choosing a watch should be we like the watch, we all have differing tastes and fashion does play a part, however, there's been a rather, what can I say, uncouth trend, toward blingy, gaudy watches that are designed for the poser, usually by way of the large, bright coloured, sports watches, each to his or hers own taste of course, but the understated dress watch conveys far more elegance and subtlety. I hope it becomes a new trend.
ОтветитьI agree. I already have my Orient Bambino gen 2! Great video Teddy!
ОтветитьYou make some good points, Teddy.
I go back and forth re dress watches. 4 or 5 years ago, my collection was 75 or 80% vintage or vintage inspired dress watches. These days things have evened out more, with more military inspired field watches, chronographs and divers.
Nonetheless, my best watches are still vintage dress watches.
Edit:
I just counted. Out of about 45 or so watches, 17 of them are dress lean dressy type watches. so a little more than 1/3.
Great points. I got into watches because of Madmen when Drapper puts on his Omega on. I have a Montblanc which is so dressy that I wear it to work or when I go out. Just the ritual of putting it on reminds me of Madmen (although it’s not an omega 😀)
ОтветитьOmega constellations, not globemasters, are I believe nice choice to play the part for both dress-up and dress down situations.
ОтветитьTeddy,
An excellent take on the dress watch. Every gentleman and every lady should own at least one. However, modern “dress watches” are very expensive. I have chosen the vintage/used market where US made Bulova, Elgin, and Waltham watches from the 30s and 40s are still very affordable. Yes, they will need servicing and, yes they will be considered small (by today’s standard), but they remain classic in design. I believe any Watch nut should revive at least one old watch and wear it!
Cheers

Only reason I need to own a dress watch in 2023: Why not??
ОтветитьI am one of those weirdos who has more dress than anything else
ОтветитьBought a Reverso because I wanted a proper dress watch when I put on a nice jacket and dress shirt. Simple as that.
ОтветитьThank you Teddy! Planning to get my 1st dress watch soon and start my collection. I really appreciate your informative videos. 🥂🍾
ОтветитьMy collection wouldn't be complete without my dress watches. They are not daily beaters but I agree that they are more versatile than you would think they are
ОтветитьJust waiting for my first "proper" (ie not a cheap quartz or the gold everite watch I inherited from my grandad) dress watch that I have chosen, an orient symphony 3. I had to attend two black tie creative events in the last year, and while my seiko 5s (diver and plain bezeled) were more formal that the smart watches most people were wearing, I felt it was time to get a nice dress watch
ОтветитьDon’t have a dress watch yet but would like to acquire a Reverso.
ОтветитьI’m in the category of rarely dressing up….i guess i would wear my Oris Big Cown Pointer Date Caliber 403…
ОтветитьThanks Teddy for another awesome video! Couldn't agree more with you!
ОтветитьI don't need any reason - I just need money to buy a reverso
Ответить
