Situations were blame could go either way: say sorry and seek compassionate mutual understanding. imo

I used to get asked the same questions (in the first few minutes of this video) as a kid by teachers and I never gave them a clear answer.

And that's because I had no self worth. I didn't think I was worth answering that question. I knew they cared about me, which is why they were asking, but I didn't care about ME.

Jocko you may not be perfect but you're a great example of what leadership actually is. It's not just managing situations. It's including and inspiring others to go above and beyond to accomplish a necessary task. And so much more that you touch on in videos like this.

Would love to see Jocko try to reason with a class full of kids from Chicago or Detroit or Baltimore or something. You wanna see something that'll make someone like even Jocko give up? That'd be it right there.

Echo, same experience with my nice Grade 7 music teacher, who failed to read the room with my problem classmates, whom had no interest in music. Short version, he was away one day, and the sub did not show. Those same kids acted up, and trashed the music room, including destroying the teacher's treasured jazz records that he adorned the room. He came back the next day, and suffered a mental breakdown, and left the school after. Needless to say, kids are nasty.

I am 32 now. I remember back in HS I almost got into a fight at the cafeteria, we threw food at each other and were about to throw hands but got stoped. They suspended me for 2 days and I thought it was really stupid way of solving the issue. I was a good kid standing up to a bully, I snuck into school in order to ask my teachers what the homework was going to be and I recalled them taking a breath of air as I explained what happened. How will screwing up my education is going to make me better? They should have made us do community service or something that would had made us pay for what we did.

As a former middle school teacher saying to a disruptive student in my class, telling that student, where did i not communicate w/ you to not do this behavior from you? A answer from kid might be, I don't care. Now what? My point is this behavior has stopped your teaching to the entire class. If you the teacher

Sincerly, thank you Jocko for correcting my mistakes by punching my moms belly when I was once inside her. Now I'm lifting 225 12 reps x 5 and make a 4k a month income job for my mom.

Echo is wrong in this one.
Teenagers (generally speaking) absolutely ARE capable of understanding the ramifications of their actions and how that will affect their life 10, 20 years from now.
The reason they don't is because nobody is explaining it in a way that will connect and nobody is holding them to the expectation of understanding it.
As soon as they walk out of that school, though, the real world doesn't care if their brains are fully developed or if they understand the consequences of their actions. The police don't care. The judges don't care. The prison system doesn't care.
I know this first hand. I've BEEN through the system and learned the hard way that the 'system' and the real world don't care.
These kids are 100% capable of understanding. Maybe not quite in the same way a 35 or 40 year old will understand, but they CAN understand in their own way.
Saying "their brains aren't developed enough to understand" is a bullshit excuse and is a large part of why so many kids, teens and young adults end up in juvenile detention or county jail or state prison.

since many have stated their appreciation for your words here, i thought i might join in.

i headed towards becoming that homeless person 2 years ago. i hit rock bottom back then. and jordan peterson helped me get back up on my feet and adjust my attitude towards myself without lying to myself. and then i saw your podcast with him, and since then i followed you as well. and you help me to adjust myself towards the surrounding, helping me to lead myself and others.

i just started my education as an it guy which i decided to start a year ago. thanks to you and jp, i am more honest to myself and better off as ever before. thanks.

What I have seen, unfortunately, are that alot of times the teacher's hands are tied. Discipline isn't allowed and/or the parents complain that poor Suzie or Joey shouldn't be disciplined, and/ or the principal won't back up the teacher. I am not a teacher. This is just what I've seen.

50 second in and I was saying "yes" As a middle school teacher, the most I improved was when a kid was just a "giant jerk" in my library class. It was hard in the moment and I am sure I was a jerk back but I learned about some new software, got some other classroom management techniques. "If you don't want to learn, no one can help you. I appreciate the perspective. Put this to use twice this morning with my kids. The first time it helped redirect some negative behavior towards each other. The second time it helped me and my wife pause a minute when another child said something insensitive.
