Thai archeologists unearthed a rare, partially fossilized and perfectly preserved whale skeleton believed to be about 5000 years old, in the west of the capital Bangkok On Friday.

The 12.5 metres (41 ft) long skeleton was discovered by a cyclist in early November who spotted part of large vertebrae coming out of the ground in an area 12km away from the sea.

The excavation has been going on for about a month and researchers believe it's the only find of its kind in Asia.

On Thursday, the right shoulder and fin were found and now they have a collection of about 36 backbone pieces.

The team is piecing together the skull and filling up cracks at the site before it is transported to the laboratory for cleaning and preservation.

The gender of the Bryde whale is not yet known and the bones needed to be carbon-dated in order to determine the exact age of the skeleton.
