The Best FREE Software for Game Development! (In my Opinion)

I've listed the links to all the free software mentioned in the video. I'll be updating it frequently with your recommendations as well. Make sure the check out the description for the full list.

No Blender is not industry standard. 3ds Max and Maya is.

Construct 3 is alright for people that want to get into gamedev but there's a limit and a 30 dollar paywall to bypass the limit, but you can still make some really good stuff with the limit if you get creative, cut a lot of corners, and scrap most for your idea

heard of CopperCube its free and can do both 3D and 2D easily

Unity

Give Unity some justice. It has no royalty costs for publishing, the payed for versions are in no means a necessity and it’s super easy to pick up on with a larger community to learn from too.

I love Godot, I think it's great, but random png files keep corrupting and rendering entire levels useles

For music, you mighr want to look into Furnace Tracker. It's free music software that handles all sorts of sound chips from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

One other pixelart editor would be pixilart, easy to use and has tons of community support

Something I use for drawing is Medibang! it's free and works on mac, windows, mobile(wouldnt reccomend it) and linux. been using it for basically my entire art carreer and its never let me down. it does have a paid feature which removes ads on the mobile versions and unlocks more brushes/materials on all versions, but it doesnt restrict any tools and allows you to upload/make brushes from a canvas.
Imo a lot of it does require a lot of tuning when it comes to the brushes but it has a TON of constant and free updates for more tools, and i pretty much use it for everything.

but you mast click on Construct 2 because construct 3 cost money

Idk if anyone said about it, but i used a software called LMMS for a time, and it's a great alternative for FL studio, i mean it's free, don't have many tools as FL, but i learned how to make music with it, so it's in a special place for me.

Scratch is my favorite game engine

I cant install game maker, it just says a installation thing is missing, while I just install it, and If i close it, it just dissapears and nowhere to be found I checked every folder/download, and nothing. can someone help me?

Some of the software listed here isn't free. Its a bit of a bug bear of mine that people who create lists of 'free' software often include apps that have a free trial rather than being genuinely free. After a short period this kind of software has to be paid for if you want to continue using it. Including these kind of apps in a list of free software is misleading and generally makes the author seem untrustworthy.

Unreasonably steep learning curve is what's wrong with "open source" software in general. By my own experience I can only imagine how many millions of people had to back up from foss to their old software just because they don't have so much time to re-learn everything completely. Like I can work in Maya or C4D at near advanced level, but Blender is like a book in Chinese, I don't understand how to even approach it(it is not good when you need a very detailed tutorials to learn how to use anything in the app. Like, I learned C4D while just casually using it, it is super logical and friendly).

You can also compile aseprite from source. Its honestly really easy

LMMS for music. It's basically FL but free

Personally, for my pixel art, I use a program in the browser called... Pixilart.
