After 50 years, you might as well say there has been a loss of intelligence in the matter of landing people on the moon, seeing how NASA managed to do it in 1969 with a fraction of today's tech, and most of those pioneering minds have now died, and since NASA's (and the whole world world's) vision has shifted away from landing on the moon to other areas of interest in terms of cosmic exploration over these years

I think any mission has many failure modes. So it requires careful painstaking analysis. In America nowdays I notice the management does not respect how detailed knowledge is required to do anything correctly. For example if I am flutter analysis on a plane it requires atleast one person to have command on the subject. In fact it has been my observation that nobody understood Aeroelastic Behavior as they used to under those very smart Americans that retired.

I think America had lost its edge. I have seen stress analysis reports that were not so perfect. Now you are working on space shuttle program. You are expected to know different modes of failure like Von Mises etc.

I was asked to review stress reports signed off by chief Engineers of big companies on Booster segments in the past . The entire analysis involved failure due to tension only.
