No, I don’t need to “walk” my room. All I need do is stand in the center and rotate my body because my little home studio is just that: little. It’s a loft above my garage. I think this video is strictly for those who have a lot more invested in studio recording than I.

My new gig requires me to mix and master in several different rooms and environments, so I’ve taken to having my headphones with me, and I’ll cross check with the room monitors, a Bose mini-link speaker, my Lola headphones, sonar works headphone correction, and sonarworks combined with Waved NX Nashville. I make small mix moves and pivot between monitoring here and there. Works really well.

When trying to explain this to people, I like to perform a simple demonstration in which I generate a single tone, and ask them to walk around and notice that the apparent volume of the tone is loud in some places and in others almost disappears. Then I repeat with a different tone, and they discover that the 'nodes' are now in different places. Another demo I use is to have them sit in in one place and generate a tone ramp. I tell them to let me know when the tone seems to disappear, and then I freeze the tone and get them to simply move their head to the sides or forward and back and notice that the volume varies. I've found these experiments to be the best way of demonstrating the problems of room nodes and standing waves.

It will also help if instead of studio foam you invest in acoustic panels. That made a world of a difference to me.

Surely if you move off axis to artificialy change the sound, you're introducing artifacts that are not related to the mix, e.g. local secondary reflections. These are artifacts of the individual listening room, not the recording. The purpose of the ideal listening position at the monitors is to remove/flatten these room charactetistics. Deliberately moving away from an optimal position in a treated room defeats the point of treating the room. Or, you could surely just use good familiar headphones if you need to check the mix.
