I wish I asked my mom earlier to teach me sewing.. She even offered teaching it to me once. Back then I wasn’t super interested. She passed away from cancer last Christmas Eve.. 😢 Anyway, I inherited her sewing machine and here I am looking for online tutorials.

Right at the beginning ❤️ Was given my first sewing machiene a few years ago. Mostly has all seemed far too daunting to make a start. Have gotten in out. Have put together a little starting kit and have found myself here 💕

Actually a bit fun that you mention stretchy fabrics are for later. For me I started with stretchy fabrics and was really scared of wovens until a few months ago.I also started with stretchy fabrics on a vintage 1955 sewing machine and was like what it is fine. Now when I am a bit more experienced and own an overlocker I see why people were HOW do you manage stretchy fabrics as a beginner on a vintage machine🤣 And I still find stretchy fabrics so much easier to work with as a beginner. They are mor forgiving for stretching the seams, to take shortcuts in curves, more forgiving to fitting. Woven are a nightmare in regards of this beacuse if you have a pucker you have a pucker you are screwed. 🤣

And I am really happy I started out on a vintage machine becuse you learn the machine better. When you dont have set wifths, when you dont even have markings in the sewing plate. You kind of learn in a different way to work with the machine, the presserfoot and were you should focus to get straight nice seams even without all the help that are embedded in mordern machines today.

I’ve been helping my mom sew since I was about six years old , she’d let us sew straight seams on blankets , I later did sewing for my younger brothers & sisters ( shorts ) etc . I started taking home economics where half the year they’d teach you to cook & the other half learning about different types of fabrics etc , I was in Jr high about 13 then , after that I’d make my own clothes , I figured I could teach myself faster than at school! I’ve made communion dresses with veils or headbands for girls , a couple of wedding gowns simple , alterations of jeans , clothes , most anything my Kenmore could sew I would do it , hundreds of baby blankets for myself & gifts , bibs , quilts a few ! I’m 69 still sewing well maybe I should say 70 bcoz October the 16 is my birthday! I hope to keep sewing I’ve also made quinceaneras dresses which translates young girls turning 15 years old , prom dresses! Hope my eyes don’t give up still enjoy sewing 🧵!

Your approach is helpful for a beginner. Start small ..I'm so excited I want to dive in but I really like what you said of looking at ready made clothing ..what the seams and stitching looks like. Thanks for a great video!

I am really new to the sewing process. But I literally would have never thought about messing around with clothes I already have. Just hearing you suggest it eased my anxiety about sewing. I have always hand stitched things, so moving up to a machine has me filled with fear, lol... thank you for all your knowledge

I don't see the point of sewing anything if it isn't altered to fit me. I am 5'10" so the main reason I started sewing was to sew clothing that fits me! I also think that starting from fresh new fabric is easier than trying to alter already existing garments. What I would recommend is starting off with something small and simple. I started in February of 2020 so mine was face masks. I made like 30 of them. I didn't count but. It taught me some skills and I got to know my machine. Then I tried to alter things and failed miserably. Then I bought a pattern and made an entire custom fit dress that looks awesome. It's a Morticia Addams costume :)

I'm 69 and I just bought a new sewing machine. I have been sewing on a Gertrude designer dress pattern for quite some time... It's a commercial pattern. I've learned tucks, darts, invisible zipper, etc. I didn't start off with knowledge about this advance pattern. I have come a long way with prayer. I'm learning because of determination, and it's in my heart to sew. I am now watching Evelyn's videos and a few others, also bought a few books. Thank you so much Evelyn, I truly appreciate you... I have daughters who always want me to go shopping with them to help them choose what to buy. I really like vintage clothes, and have bought lots of gorgeous vintage patterns. I am older generation that had sewing at school, with those Singers with the turning handle at the side😂. Plus I grew up with my Gran who made clothes for all the rich ladies in her town. Between the two I learnt quite a bit. In my twenties, I purchased a machine and started either pulling favourite worn out clothes apart and copying the patterns, or design my own (rather basic) clothes. In 2021, my daughter could not find a suitable bridesmaid dress (she is 6ft tall) and rocked up at my house, with a bag of fabrics and a drawing, stating "you used to design and make your own clothes, please make this dress for me😶). I took the challenge, but because my sewing machine was old and wonky, I only made a mockup dress and then got a professional seamstress to actually sew it. After being retrenched in 2020, I have been battling to find employment and stressing big time. My daughter once again rocked up with a bag of fabrics and some pcetches, and stated that she wanted to start an online clothing brand😮. The idea was to do the same as with the bridesmaid dress, but then I was blessed with an almost brand new sewing machine that worked 100%. Suddenly I was dumped into the very deep end and had to be the seamstress too and, although I managed to create the garments, I was not 100% happy with it. The first batch of clothes have been "modelled" and the website is up and running, and now I have to make extra stock. And you have no idea how happy I am to learn all these things - most of them will fix the things I was not happy with. And the learning continues ... I Iove it❤. Can't work through the videos quick enough. Oh and another lesson I learnt from one of the other videos is to write down the order that I do things. When I have to make new ones, I can't remember exactly what I did. If I write the steps down and file with the pattern, I can just look at that. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these videos💕💕

I love your tip about learning by altering garments that are already made, so that you can see how a piece has been constructed! Brilliant! I imagine a good place to find these would be a thrift store or op shop, and it might be a good idea to find a few thrifted pieces by higher end name brands - because often the cheaper "fast fashion" clothing is made really poorly, whereas higher quality brands will use better fabrics and longer-lasting stitching techniques. It would also be really educational to practice altering a piece of clothing that had been handmade to start with (also available at thrift stores/op shops), since then you could see someone else's approach to hand sewing and machine sewing, how they cut out the pieces and fit them together, and possibly also how they fixed their own mistakes.

Thank you Evelyn! Upcycling is something I really want to commit to because it's the best way I can think of to manage the literal and emotional baggage I carry with many of my old clothes, and to test my ethics as a student of ecology. I want to make sure I'm living sustainably for all the time I spend learning about caring for the Earth. But it's clear to me that learning these skills will take time and patience. I'm not the most disciplined person in the world, so having clear steps to guide me rather than bursts of motivation is the safest route to learning to sew. Thank you for these helpful tips, and I'll be sure to follow your work as I go along too.

I'm so glad I found your channel. It's the only one that is so comprehensive and covers a multitude of topics and skills, as well as having excellent production values. I've done a lot of hand sewing but am just getting started with a vintage heavy duty Kenmore machine. I'm a man and plan on making my own casual shirts and boxers at first, working my way up to outdoor wear and suit jackets, as well as some heavy duty fabrics for curtains, backpacks, tool pouches, tote bags, acoustic panels, and guitar amplifier covers. I also want to become better at altering clothing, as I'm shorter than average and it's often necessary to shorten sleeves and pant hems on clothing I buy. Thanks for everything! You rock!

I'm not so sure about taking apart and cutting up/altering my good clothing as a beginner... what if I make my clothes too small or mess up badly and can't wear the outfit? Then I've destroyed a top or pair of pants that mightve cost more than the fabric for a basic blouse pattern, and I'm down some clothing.

My sewing machine I use off and on to upscale clothes I find in vintage or thrift shops. Taking in sides and adding darts, our work shirts were all to boxy so I inserted darts for a smart corporate look. If I purchase the incorrect size of a dress I am always taking the shape in . Purchased a doona cover at op shop . I have been practicing the stitches , made some ornament holders for things in the home.
