The Fellow Ode 2: The Review

I had this grinder, and regardless of the ionizer, it still had a ton of static. I used the water spray method and that helped the static problems. Another issue is the hopper. It would never feed the beans completely, even at the new angles, and when spraying the beans, half the beans would be stuck in the hopper and not get to the burrs. I ended up returning it. I really wanted to love it. Hoping the V3 fixes the hopper angle or maybe they add a fine texture so the wet beans don't stick to the smooth plastic. (nothing you can do about the static)

Love this review, but James, just pour from the other side of the cup without the fins.

I wonder if it can make good espresso?

oh my god the beeping - don't get me started. I have a toaster that beeps when the toast is ready, EVEN THOUGH THERE'S ALREADY A SOUND. Not only does it beep though, it beeps THREE TIMES. And the final nail is that it beeps when YOU PUT THE TOAST DOWN. WHY??? I know I'm putting the toast down, I'm right there doing it! /okrantover

I got one for Christmas and returned it two weeks later, it got jammed and unjamming it was a pain, but it wouldn't work even after unjamming it.

Please make 53.5 for the Breville portafilters as well!

I had the original Ode since the crowdsourcing start, and I can't tell you how happy I am with the Gen 2. It solves every issue I had with the original version. All else being equal, I think this is the single best filter coffee grinder on the market today.

I'm still wondering how much retention there is on this grinder, and how easy it is to clean or blow out.

Having used it for a while now, I quite like it, the fins don't really bother me, but I'm grinding quite a bit coarser than you are probably. That said, the top still does not fit properly, though it felt like it fit better right out of the box, so maybe it's a temp thing in their factory vs at home use?

You can rotate the dosing cup 90-180 degrees in your hand and just bypass the fins lol

Hey James, got a question about this grinder and espresso. Which mod would you do to grind beans for espresso with this grinder? I know it's nor suitable, but is there a mod that would grind acceptable espresso? Thanks in advance.

What should I get when I can't afford to spend $350 USD on a goddamn coffee grinder?

I use an aeropress at home. Like...I don't want to spend even $200 USD on a coffee grinder. Hell, not even really $100 USD. It shouldn't be that difficult to grind coffee...

I even see manual coffee grinders for $400 CAD on marketplace that look like they have nonsense chinese no-name all over them. How could that possibly be worth that much?

Thank you for review, I enjoyed my first grind, compared the grounds with my previous conical burr grinder, the flat burrs do a huge difference. It definitely worth the money!
Watching your review, I was thinking the comment about the plastic lid on coffee cup is kind of picky, but you are 120% right ;-) Maybe it can get also magnetic?

You lost me at “filter coffee only”

I bought this. I’ve had it for several months now, and I agree completely with every single thing said in this review. Same experience with the dosing cup, same slight cringe about the price, same tasty coffee and even independently arrived at the same grind size for light roasted specialty coffee. I’m very glad I bought it. This is my first electric grinder and I’m comparing it with the Timemore T2 hand grinder (IRRC the model name).

The Ode 2 is $495 in the U.S. as of 3/2024.

What watch are you wearing James? I ordered this new gen 2 after good performance with the gen 1. Hoping for a better experience.

I bought the Gen 2 with SSP MP burrs and it's been amazing. Best filter coffee grinder ever!

The beans get jammed while trying to grind! I can remove them and clean out but don’t want to take it apart in order to get a grind for 3-4 cups!
So what’s the problem? It can’t grind dark roast, need more powerful motor?

I’m really confused here as I paid for the ode 2 but mine beeps at the end of grinding. The date stamp reads Q22021. Have I been duped?

Just picked up a new one for £260. It was a charitable donation to a well known UK charity on ebay, they may have more! I have to say I am over the moon with it.

I don't think the anti-static feature lasts very long. My Fellow Ode 2 is around 2 months old, and now grinds go all over my counter. I cleaned the ionic device as recommended, but it still doesn't work.

Great review! For $345 usd, it should do espresso period. It should be capable of doing anything honestly. That's pretty dissapointing.

Guys, I’m thinking of getting a fellow ode gen 2 for filter and coldbrew coffee and a niche zero for espresso for my small coffee shop, will they work well? Workflow and back to back? I would be so thankful for the helps and opinions.

I set the Cuisinart Supreme Grind DBM8 that I use now to the course setting for poor over, but a fine powder collects on the sides of the bin that I scrape off and use in the espresso machine. I wonder if the Ode does the same. If so, that would solve the issue of not grinding espresso.

A year later.a bit disappointed the anti static feature doesn't work as well. With the top on when I remove the bin the top scrapes against the chute and coffee grinds drip out on to magnetic bin holder and counter 😔
