In his presentation Maarten Hell discussed the history of the island Vlooienburg, once the center of the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam. After the demolishment in the 20th century, archaeologists excavated a large part of this neighborhood. Their finds reflect the material culture of the ethnic and religious pluriform population. Based on historical research Hell reconstructed the infrastructure and daily life of the inhabitants in the early modern period, when this was the home of merchants, printers, physicians, teachers, shopkeepers, slumlords and other Sephardic newcomers. On Vlooienburg they lived together with locals, Ashkenazim and gentile immigrants from all over the world.
Maarten Hell (1970) is specialized in early modern history of the Dutch Republic. Biography, social history, food ways and diplomatic culture care are some of his fields of interest. In 2017, he published his dissertation on Amsterdam drinking houses (AD 1450-1800). After that, he did postdoc-research for the NWO project Diaspora and identity, a combined archaeological and historical investigation into material life, ethnicity, and diet on Vlooienburg (AD 1600-1800). In 2024, his book about daily life on Vlooienburg was published (in Dutch: Verloren wereld in de Amstelbocht: Leven op Vlooienburg, 1600-1815).
