It's very unfortunate this happened - but tragedy brings wisdom. We know that Carbon Fiber unto itself is NOT suitable for diving expeditions of any kind. Further the Titan was constructed without an escape hatch (yes at the lower depths not worth anything) but we don't build subs without a topside escape hatch. It was all wrong.

The sub was completely capable had dived it before and performed many deep sea dives.. but I dont think they probably they got over confident on the reliablity of it

My only comment on the transcript notes is that it's possible the sub descends faster early on? Either that, or is the 'depth' a pressure measurement or other unit?

This transcript is as fake as the ones that circulate on the Internet claiming to show the conversation between Challenger crew members after the explosion. I can't imagine this transcript being kept from the military leaders of the response effort, and if those people did have it, I can't imagine them trying to pretend to engage in a "rescue effort" for several days after.

If the Transcript was true, why they didn't activate the recovery procedures at 9:28 am when they received the rtm alarm?

I am glad that the CEO was involved with his failure. He was an obnoxious human being, who defied the other experts. He also worked around many legal safeguards! So sorry for the other victims.

I read that each time the vessel dove it effected the structural integrity of the carbon fibers themselves, hence just a matter of time.

What does the speed of their descent mean? As far as I know there are no speed limits underwater. Your speed comments don't mean anything. How fast does a nuclear submarine descend?

The one thing that gives me pause about this being real, is the fact that they said their ascent rate was "small." In navigation, I believe the proper term would be "low." Your ascent/descent rate is either "high" or "low."

It is crazy to know they were about 1,000ft or about 400m away from the Titanic. This video is excellent, and I believe as well that they descended way too fast. It makes you wonder if there were any warnings with that descent rate with almost reaching destination in half the time????? Did the pinhole begin at a much shallower depth????? I know me personally, there isn't any amount of money that could be rewarded to me for such a trip, so I know all these men were solely thrilled seeking and wanted to go. I hate the fact these passengers hadn't got any safety reassurance such as a certified submersible hull test by SUBSAFE etc. and just boarded anyways.

Nothing unfortunate whatsoever about this situation. "A fool and his money are soon parted." Five very rich, foolish thrill seekers are now sharing a watery grave with ACTUAL victims, those of the Titanic. A mission of fools that served no purpose whatsoever, to an uninhabitable, non-survivable destination. No sympathy from me.

Probably would not have made a difference, but there should have been some sort of automatic jettison of the ballast and frame at the first RTM alarm. You would have to look at the transcripts of previous dives to see if the RTM alarms were considered "normal" and ignored. They didn't jettison or attempt to ascend until the thrusters failed to retard the descent rate, which would indicate that buoyancy had already been affected, which would also seem to be indicated by the faster than normal descent rate. That fact alone should have aborted the mission at the 15 minute mark. Aborting the mission between the 15 minute mark and the 1 hour check in were probably the only opportunities to save the crew. Careful observation of the descent profile should have been protocol.

I don't understand the motive for the transcript to be fake.

So if it is, what does that even mean other than still being the same gross oversight of safety precautions.

Descending faster then your average at shallower depths shouldnt be an issue.
At the deeper depths then descent rate should be much slower.

I don't know anything about deep sea stuff or submersibles, but when I heard that somebody made a sub out of carbon fiber, I was dumbfounded. Even a 5th grader would know that's a really bad idea.

The transcript seems to make sense. But we won't know for certain if it's authentic until the investigation is complete & the transcript of radio comm is officially released. I remember reading somewhere. That Carbon fiber is a very strong material when it is subjected to tension loads. Being stretched & pulled. But it was never designed for compression loads. They managed to get away with it for several dives. But if they were descending too fast to begin with. Perhaps water had already begun entering the battery comp during the descent? Hopefully the investigators can give us the truth when they rap up the investigation.

I wonder if them ditching the frame is what caused the structure to fail so quickly. The crackling sounds only started after they ditched the frame after multiple attempts, and (according to their findings anyway) the structure shouldn't fail so quickly under normal circumstances. I'm thinking if maybe the frame had some problems (which is why they had to use multiple attempts), and when it finally came off it probably bumped the submersible hard somewhere and made it collapse much faster.

We don't know what the descent rate was, assuming that it was a steady rate is wrong. It is possible that it begins fast and then slows down... we don't know, unless they state that there was a rate to follow. So I cannot accept that part of they hypothesis. However, the script does read as one might expect it to read. If there was a leak that caused the malfunction, it may have happened at a depth where the sub wouldn't have imploded, perhaps on a previous ascent, and during maintenance, being repaired. The water might have then been already inside the instrument panels. I say this, because if there had been any leak of sorts then the submersible would have imploded, which it did, in an instant, not allowing for a slow leak, but a malfunction in the system, and then ejecting the rail, it is very possible that that caused the damage that was to lead to the implosion. Nevertheless, it was a horrific 20 minutes. Not being able to ascend, at that point, all hope was lost.

The part I can't reconcile is that Rush kept saying they were decending "as planned." If that were true then had he planned to decend more quickly? And why were the Polar people NOT worried from the outset about the rate of dcent?

Ответить
Jeff Riecken
Jeff Riecken - 13.09.2023 02:49

Let me ask this, if the sub was supposed to be rated for the pressure at the depth (which it wasn't but let's assume it was) why would descent rate matter? There's no equalization or pressure adjusting going on. Or is there.
