Been there, done that with sudden loss and have the hearing aids to prove it. Happened in both ears, but three years apart. Left has about 45db loss, but still decent word recognition at about 80%. Right is a disaster at 90dB loss and 12% word recognition. The left ear was first and my former primary thought it was due to a sinus infection, so no real treatment until I went to an ENT, but too late by then. Did not matter though, as when the right ear went out, I headed back to the ENT within three hours of discovering the loss. Steroid treatment, both orally and with inner ear injections, did not help. When asked why it happened, the answer was, essentially, beats hell outta me. Probably a virus. This was eight and five years ago. And, apparently, I’m one of a pretty small percentage of people who have bilateral loss that occurred at two different points in time…..yay me! Least I’m a champ at something.

A few years ago I started having extreme vertigo, loud tinnitus. Long story short i was diagnosed with AIED. I left it too late and lost some high frequency hearing loss

About 4 years ago I woke up Saturday morning with total loss in my right ear. I had not had any hearing issues previously. Went to Quick Care who found nothing. Took about a week to see my primary doctor who was stumped. Finally found an ENT, recommended by my neighbor, who put me on high dose of Prednisone for a while with no improvement. The neighbor actually had the same overnight loss as me but was able to see the ENT immediately and the Prednisone worked. I was just too late. The doctor said “it’s just something that happens and we don’t know why.” I believe it had something to do with powerful pain NSAID’s like Tramadol and Hydrocodone I was taking for terrible arthritis pain and other injuries. It scared me so much I totally stopped taking both and now try to get by on Tylenol, yes,
another NSAID, but it helps very little. Just trying to live with the pain, but I’m a total grump. 😊
I would love to see if testing could determine if any association exists between heavy NSAID use and sudden hearing loss. Has it ever been tested?

I am 44. In August 2023 I woke up during my holidays with a sudden hearing loss on my right ear. First I thought my ear wax was clothed so I only saw a doctor a day later, worrying about a possible painless middle ear infection. Since my work requires auditioning singers I was extra worried when I saw a doctor and got the first diagnoses of temporary hearing loss (an ear infarct). All speaking voice frequencies were under 60% so in the hospital they recommended I would take part in a new clinic study. Luckily this study is also embedded at the Dutch university clinic in Nijmegen. I am based in The Netherlands so I quickly returned home to not miss the window of about 6 days when the treatment should start. At the hospital of Nijmegen I had to undergo new tests and after 6 days when I woke up with the hearing loss my hearing was slightly better so I could not take part of the clinic study any longer. So I started a regular 10 day treatment of 60mg prednisolon per day. I felt the side effects of the medication but 14 days after the start of the treatment started I made another test and the hearing was back to 100%. I obviously was extremely relieved and felt it’s important to share my story, as it helped me a lot to hear positive stories while trying to accept any outcome of my recovery. During my healing phase I did not drink alcohol, I saw many friends, slept a lot, but also did many hikes, I was on a 100% sickness leave for 2 weeks which helped a lot to focus on my needs and healing.

I was just sitting down watching a video when my hearing in my right ear started to get less. There is a very small amount of ringing but there was no pop or anything painful. What have I got?

more research needs to be done in how to fight infections or viruses before the damage is done. I lost a lot for lower tones on the left ear an higher on the right ear. the low tinnitus in the left ear SUCKS
