Improving employability of computer graduates : Drupal Camps in Dharamshala

"Computer Graduates passing out of Indian Engineering Institutes are of low employability" - is not Breaking News.
This was voiced by the CEO of TATA Consultancy Services a decade back, and the quality-quantity ratio of Computer Graduates is not showing any signs of improvement.
There is a crying need to get the students hands-on with the industry, to improve their chances of better jobs by the time they become graduates.

Students coming from urban backgrounds, have an advantage with exposure to the Web and more "In" technologies.
What about students coming from semi-urban, rural backgrounds? Improving their employbility is a major challenge, which if overcome will greatly improve the allround quality of computer professionals in India.

In Dharamshala, as a socially motivated business entity, we started Drupal Camps in various colleges.
The objective was to motivate students to Drupal as a starting career choice to step into the Knowledge Industry.

In the past 12 months we have conducted 6 Drupal camps, involving our employees, students and faculty.
Our employees are always eager to volunteer for the Camps as it gives a great sense of satisfaction giving back to the local community.
The faculty of colleges are eager as this is a first of its kind of initiative in the state of Himachal, and teachers are also sensitized to where the Web is going.
The target audience is the student community and we have received a resounding response form them. All camps have seen capacity student attendance. The computer labs have enough computers, but still need working Operating Systems (Windows as usual on all terminals) The introduction to the Web is a mere formality, (thank you Google, Facebook and sasta broadband). Then we explain to them static web sites, dynamic web sites, Content Management Systems and do a hands-on Drupal installation. If the interest persists we go on and explain to them the Admin UI, modules and themes.
It is great to see the natural interest coming from the students, which is like the spark to start the fire of technology in them.
We take down all the participants contact details, assure them that they are welcome in our Office any time they want to understand something.

I personally feel, these endeavours are required across the Computer Education system around India, as the students are becoming very "bookish"
trying to secure high grades, and not really enjoying Computer Sciences. Drupal and the Web are a great place to start to develop a true interest in Computer Science and Information Technology. Drupal is a great platform to develop all round Computer Skills.

Around 10 students started to come to our Office for some real exposure and we are ready to absorb 5 such students who have stayed on and committed themselves to a stable career in the Drupal space. We consider this a success of our volunteer based Camps and cannot wait to reach out to the rest of Himachal. Inviting all to join us !!
