CONV/RGENCE: A Bad League of Legends Story

The Thing that disappointed me the most in this game is the lack of Vi, Caitlyn, Zeri, and other characters in Piltover. Vi and Caitlyn could had helped Echo during the story. Weird that the game devs left them out.

You know there is such a simple change they could have made to Warwick, have him encounter future Ekko and smell a shit ton of blood on his hands, so much that he goes crazy and start hunting present Ekko.

They could make it so much better by just exchanging Jinx and warwick roles in the game. Instead of warwick chase sequence make Jinx chase ekko around becouse she is just bored and finds destroying everything around her on punk rock roket shooting bike fun. Meanwhile instead of a cult of jinx make those kids worship warwick, they can be edgy and think that warwick is cool but also respect him becouse he gets rid of the "filth" from the city. By doing so you can make them have a little more depth, mayby thier close ones were killed by criminals that are abundant in the city so that is why the started liking warwick so much. By doing so it also makes the chapter 6 not feel like its not connected at all, you can make it so that ekko needs to make a choice of either looking for the future ekko which he is runing out of time to do or save innocent people from warwicks rampage started by those anoying little shits.

Communication

honestly, having Warwick along for the adventure for a chapter, just for him to meet future ekko, and smelling the blood on his hands, which have the same scent as current ekko's hands, making WW go berserk at him, could've been a really cool way to implement him
and set us up to the conversation ekko has with future parents, with him understanding that he is just a few bad rewinds away from literally becoming the same person
maybe even almost tempting to return time and talk with his parents again just to be reminded that he is not invincible from becoming that manipulative version of himself

this game seem to have had so many awesome ways to incorporate the story in the setting

HELL, CHAPTER 6, FUTURE EKKO JUST WENT MASK OFF
maybe he had a debacle with jinx when off screen, and she comes wounded and angry, trying to finish you off to prevent future ekko from existing
on the way still completely ignoring her stans because they arent important, could both be a great motivation that is story relevant to her, AND could push the 'haha dumb teenagers looking ridiculous' gag they tried to put there
great opportunity for red to do something against jinx to protect ekko, and by that losing her relationship to the stans and chad specifically, but earning something better

i dont know which part of riot is to blame for this lack luster story, but mark me as disappointed by the missed opportunities to expend this ever so fascinating world they built

Camille: who cares? Now that, that mess is over with I need a good cleaning, being in this filth pit with you mongrels for even a second is too long. It sounds like the team wanted gameplay like Ekko in Zaun but with themes and personality of Seraphine

Wait wait wait wait, Camille isn't VA by an old lady?? Ayyah.

I have a crackpot theory developing that Riot HQ sabotaged this game's story so they can justify doing something to Piltover and Zaun lore or so that they can shut down Riot Forge/take more control over what stories it tells. We're nearing the end of the announced Forge games and having the game near the end of the lineup be a flop is the perfect reason to reduce funding. The final few things in any sequence are the most likely to stick in a person's mind and Convergence is the second to last in the Riot Forge lineup. Now, there had to be a failure at some point but I still find this suspicious. Edit: The idea about sabotage is also an expectation about Arcane's success being a shadow looming over all of League lore.

Honestly I think this is a better way to handle the league universe. There's so much going on that if they actually want to tell a story, they can't do that in the main game, so spinoffs and one shots and individual, character focused narratives are a fabulous way to do that.

i think riot should actually use new champions as fuel for the story but make them more than like viego who's only shtick is mist which after event is cast into obscuirty which feels really cheap considering how nice runeterra worlds is

As someone who very much enjoyed this game, i do completely agree with most of these points and noticed them myself during my playthrough. Its a very flawed game, but I do love it for the art, music, and other parts that they actually did well.

the lux and zed comics were pretty good

Honestly I'm surprised that the story hit so low been that now in retrospective many minor changes could be done

Jinx: change her story momento to be earlier in the story maybe 2 act opening thingy " like a fun adventure " before the evil ekko reveal

Red: yeah this poor girl need a whole redo of her character and arc including the Jinx gang

Warwick: this seems so easy to me, have ekko just fight a dangerous gang of chem barons and just by coincidence now he smells like them and Warwick confuse him as just another bloody gang member

And camile: ohh yeah I completely agree that they do there character dirty. I'm 100 % sure someone in mid production says " yeah we have enough catilyn merchandise replace her with camile " oh hell if you wanna keep camile have ekko and catilyn working together but with camile as some kind of enforcer or boss for catilyn, she can have those warm moments with ekko and zaun while camile is the voice on the back pushing the plot and not letting us forget the cruelty that keeps zaun and piltover in the ways they are

It really hurts when a game adds npcs just to be merchants, without leaning into their story

at least the gameplay was fun. it really needs a boss rush or a survival mode though, it just doesnt have the replayability :(

I REALLY don't understand why Red means a fucking thing to Ekko in this game, like we don' t talk to Red EVER. Like not to mention of anyone Ellie is clearly the way better option too, she's literally helpful to our cosmetic choices and is someone we can constantly talk to. Red was clearly shoved in at the very last moment.

Did you read camille story when it was her brother order this? And forget ekko beat her thus if you can't them join them?

If you're one of the people TBS mentioned in the market for a Metroidvania specifically, Hollow Knight is probably the best ever made and is actually on sale for $7.50 right now. Buy it whether or not you were going to buy Convergence

Convergence might have been a miss, but tho many might be fans of Sylas game, there were some mistakes made there too in terms of writing. Its messed up to make the leader of a resistance against an establishment that is persecuting people the VILLAIN of the region and story. And I liked that they started developing him, but because at the end of the story he still pursues chasing after power to further fight Demacia that kinda ruins the progression he's made, and thats just 1 of a few other blunders, but this issue has more to with how Demacia has been rewritten overall. Such as turning previously good aligned characters VERY morally grey in a way that doesn't feel good, while still letting the Mageseekers run amok unchecked and making them nearly unrelatable villains. It doesn't feel right in many ways. Sylas currently IS a villain, sucky as that might be; let him keep a few of his villainous tendencies, even as he grows, i don't think his character arc should be nearly resolved w/in this one game, bc it obviously isn't.

Back to Convergence tho, idk why they didn't just move Jinx's part earlier in the story. She stole Syntixi...and half the story FE and PE spend time looking for those crystals so it makes sense to go, hey Jinx stole some, go after them, She will probably show up at the Inx concert. I strongly agree with ur sentiment on Red, and Warwick, i think Urgot would have been a good replacement (but more complex to animate). I...don't wanna talk about Camille. I agree that Caitlyn would also have been a perfect replacement for the story. Also as a sniper that could have made some interesting changes of pace for a boss fight. But again just like Reveck Camille was another chance to make a discussion oh how the tech you use changes you. She replaced her heart for hextech a tool to make her achieve her goals. the same is said for FE, he also replaced part of his body and it was part of what really changes him, maybe it was also his heart?

Honestly, I think Camille's behaviour would have worked if she was implemented in the story alongside the theme of tech changing her -- maybe she could have gone through some kind of path towards redemption. I think the problem was more that she just acts like she does for no reason

Yeah this seems a classic case of finding a great idea but not being able to do anything of note with it.

Personally, as a returning player, I just hope that one day we are going to get story having Ahri, Rengar and other "Vastaian" champions on their road of revenge on people who decided that just because there are multiple animal-people it must mean they are the same race, and not individuals with wildly different backstories such as animal gaining sentience.

edit Did they really made Warwick into a good person via retcon? Wow. But keep in mind - the pre-retcon Warwick actually fits with what Conv/rgence used. The game was in developement for too long, devs didn't expect bad retcon

I think the game in general suffers from "the need" to have all ages rating. I'm really disappointed in riot on how they trashed Zaun and all the characters in this game... They got rid of the things I love about Zaun.

The only thing I was hoping to see at the end of Convergence was a scene of Camille talking to someone from the clan Ferros, saying something along the lines off "The execution of the plan was flawless, the time-manipulating boy has guided me into his hideout, and now, we have the knowledge to build our own Z-Drive. This time, we wont make any mistakes, and Piltover would reach the perfection it needs, starting by eliminating those inferior zaunites" or something like that. But alas, that's not what happened and it only lives in ny mind as a headcanon.

There's loads of 'insteads' in the game.

Instead of Warwick, the game could've used either Twitch, Dr. Mundo, or even Urgot. Urgot even works with the 'you stepped into my territory' too, and Urgot would've made Future Ekko scared too, because he knows how unreasonable Urgot is and how dangerous he could be. As a plus, having Urgot's mechanical spider legs climb in the background as a giant shadow, or just having the skitters of his legs would've been quite the trigger for arachnophobes.

Instead of Camille, why not use Caitlyn instead? Works fine with the 'working with Piltover crowds' since Caitlyn too wanted the same thing (and did so with Vi too). Plus they both met in Arcane, so that's another story thread they could use.

Instead of Jinx, why not use Seraphine? Works with the 'fanatic fans' thing since Seraphine has Zaunite parents and did concert in Zaun too. There's even lore material that says Ekko and his friends attended her concert too. Can just make it so that Seraphine mistook him for those who're too fanatic and almost bombed the concert, so there's the boss fight. There's also even lore about how Caitlyn likes Seraphine too, so it would make sense why Caitlyn is there attending the concert, and make sense how Caitlyn would save Ekko from the boss fight with Seraphine and explaining to Sera that Ekko isn't her enemy.

Or if they really want to get Jinx cameo, then make Jinx the one who placed the bomb, and have Ekko's friends and Red attend the concert while Ekko didn't. Could have that moment where Ekko have to choose between dealing with his future self with ample time, or try to save his friends from Jinx's antics and race against time to find his future self.


It really did felt like the team behind Convergence just read the stuff from LoL's official website, and they probably didn't click on the 'read more'.

You could fix Camille by making it so she was using ekko to get rid of the syntixi because it’s horning in on the hextech crystal market

You could fix Warwick very easily by making him try to kill the mysterious stranger and ekko defends him

The funny thing is with all the Fate side reviews, the Ekko styled story is performed in a way that lets it breath with Unlimited Blade Works and Zero in effect.
But it would be a spoiler who specifically it matters too.
There's also Re:Zero, which while not adapted as parts of the anime, depicts the unfortunate dark turn result of how every arc can go as bonus novels.
Like Subaru himself chooses to completely dehumanize himself and others by exploiting his time reversal, effectively living more lives than the entire local population for something merely for a single pleasant morning.
Subaru becomes a major criminal by completely indulging into having everything in his favor by losing all faith in others, and more.

well guess its time for a jinx game at this point xD sorry to say that. (and yes, im kinda one of the day 1 jinx fans, that STILL loves this girl and i know thats so fkin boring, cuz now kinda EVERYONE loves her... duh) :D

I feel like future ekko and ekko ekko would've benefitted from a teacher and student relationship to build a connection. It makes sense since future ekko is, well, future ekko. Its like he gives advice or whatever(btw ive never played the game)

You should be at the design team creating theses games, your capacity for depth, nuance and relevance is amazing!!

Finally someone talking about how dumb the story of this game is. It's just another trying to be revolution story made by north americans/europeans. Quite shallow.

Storytelling is usually the problematic part of a lot of Metroidvania games sadly but they always try to make is deep

Camille fits the "changed by technology" aspect but I also think she makes more sense as a boss fight gameplay wise. Caitlyn feels a lot more like an obstacle for a level where you need to keep moving, stay hidden or bait her into missing shots in order to progress. Camille's kit allows her to zoom around and actually make an interesting fight. Either wat I must say I appreciate them not just reusing the arcane cast.

i feel, watching videos like this makes myself more critical towards the media that i consume... and I dont know, if this is for the better, or the worse.
