Wow. I’m old and I just discovered what a serger is and more surprised to see what it does! Dang! This vid was very enlightening. It helps a ton to see.

Nice, but why cut at all? Why not just fold up an all-around-loop or what it could be called, and sew one simple seam?Maybe secure the loose looped materialpointing downwards by some hand stitches to keep it against the trouser leg?The existing seams would be very thick, but does oit matter when it is on the inside, not showing?

I have hemmed many pants in my 30 years of sewing. What a great tutorial on how to hem jeans. Wish I had known this. You can always learn a new trick!!! However, I don't sew any more due to carpal tunnel surgery in both hands and cubital tunnel surgery in elbow! Word to the wise.... exercise and stretch your hands to keep from getting carpal tunnel! Sewing all those years messed up my lower back, neck and hands!!!! Boy do I miss my industrial machine!!!

Easy to understand from a technical standpoint. If you do each leg separately you don’t need to mark the pieces to match them, and marking the legs on all sides didn’t matter as you laid them flat when you cut them and never examined the other side. Thanks for sharing.

I would most likely start my hem at the outside seam to line up since most visible. If it goes off a tad, I'd rather have the mismatch inside. Question, tapered legs could add fabric to the lower hem section ya? How would you deal with fabric bunching?

How come no more videos?? I've learned more cool tips from this one video than i have learning as i go.
Ah well I'll check out your others.

Off topic question, i have the same serger you used here. I noticed you are doing a 3 thread overlock. I have basically been forced to use 3 because for some reason my 4th thread (left) won't chain up anymore.. would you have any idea why?
Well hope you come back again ✌️

Great job but you can literally do this in a fraction of the time by NOT cutting them... instead just roll the pant leg up and sew right under the factory hem. It gives you the EXACT same result! By the way, I love ur bangs : )

Thank you for this excellent video. Its my go to video whenever I have to shorten jeans for my family.... the results have been beautiful, just as you say in the video. I really appreciate the details and all the fine points you go into. I do have difficulty lining up the seams, as these area bulky and as I push the bulk through the machine, I lose the alignment. Any tips for how to do this perfectly every time?

I don’t understand why you have to cut it off and put it back on. Couldn’t you just leave it on while surging and it would be surged together all in one

My sewing resume is like many shared here, decades of experience but mine includes an off/on hiatus over 20 years. Your video is so great showing the close up every time it might be needed for clarity and adding nuances for the experienced. At 5’2” I’ve had to alter an lot of pants but jeans were so problematic. I have 4-5 pairs to hem this week for the fall/winter months so I’m confident to start. Look forward to you videos as I have subscribed.

Great video!
Things we do differently in the UK are, that we fold the Jean hems to where needed first, stitch the edge of the original hem, then cut off the excess leaving 1 - 1.5cm allowances, overlock 2 layers of raw edges together and finally top stitch to finish them off.
With this method we can still double check if the lengths are correct before cutting the fabric, avoid unnecessary left/right mixup, and only need a single run of overlocker.

Why do you start with a domestic sewing machine then use an industrial one which could have coped with the thickness of the seams anyway. I thought it was disingenuous of you not to do the whole video on a domestic machine

Great instructions and your helpful tips are so clever. The finished product didn't even look altered. Would using iron-on fusing tape help keep the excess material laying flat inside the pant leg instead of sewing the extra stitch line to keep it flat?

Actually, there is another method that works just as well without cutting into the pant hem... You can do the fold method and stitch in the ditch to the same affect. I prefer this., myself
