Proof by contradiction is important in modern mathematics because most of it is non constructive.
To prove something directly means to analyse all the possible cases allowed by the hypotheses of the theorem and show that the thesis holds for all of them. Often we deal with real numbers or the continuum cardinality, so that is impossible to actually construct the objects involved. This is because we define real numbers and continuum cardinality assuming that every statement is either true or false, even if we cannot construct an example. In this way, through the logical principle "terzium non datur"(which is not assumed by constructivists) we can explore non constructible objects with no need for construct all of them.
