When Eleanor says ‘Rachel will never be enough’ it’s not just about passing down the generational pain from Ah Ma, it’s also Rachel being a reflection of how Eleanor raised Nick … Nick is the prized grandson, the heir to the family fortune and empire, and if Eleanor lets him marry Rachel, it’s more proof to Ah Ma that Eleanor is as ‘worthless’ as she thinks

The irony of this scene is that we see that Eleanor still doesn’t measure up in Ah Ma’s eyes. When she says to Rachel that she will never be enough, she is reflecting the message Ah Ma has sent her the entirety of her marriage and still does now.

I feel sad for Eleanor. Her husband should had backing her more. My husband will never and ever let his family miss treating me. A man should stand for the woman he loves especially he knews that she wasn’t the choosen one. We haven’t see her husband during the entire movie.

At the beginning I thought Eleanor was mean and condescending but after Ah Ma criticized her dumpling's I did start to feel sorry for her. Eleanor sacrificed her own dreams, goals and happiness to try and please her mother-in-law but she never good enough hence why Eleanor came across as abrupt in some of the scenes. When Eleanor said 'you will never be enough' it wasn't personal, she was trying to warn Rachel that marrying into a wealthy Chinese family comes with making a lot of sacrifices and unless you come from the right background you will never be accepted. My mum came from a quite well-to-do Chinese family, so I know the kinds of expectations they have and how hard it is, especially for a daughter-in-law. I told my mum I would never marry into a wealthy Chinese family and she understands.
