You know if you think about it, Star Wars is kinda messed up. Droids like R2 prove that, if given the time and not having their memory wiped all the time, they can develop free thinking and personalities. They're basically sentient, yet everyone treats them like they're expendable. Sure, good guys will be nice to them and maybe develop friendships, but at the end of the day, they don't matter. Even Obi-Wan calls them "a dime-a-dozen."
