You mentioned Zombie games being done to death and something has to change. I think a lot of it is the gameplay loop. I don’t think a game like that necessarily needs much of a story. Some of the most fun I’ve seen from these games game from concepts like Death Road to Canada and project Zomboid, where you have a whole lot of things that can happen, but you just need to survive. 7 Days To Die kind of steps towards that. I think there is a sweet spot somewhere between Tarkov style looting and extracting and Project Zomboid’s depth that would make for one hell of an experience. Not really an extraction game, but you kinda wanna get back before sundown sorta deal because shit gets scarier at night and turning a flashlight on makes you a beacon for attention. Remember how scary Tarkov was when people first started playing? People were legit scared, lol. Take that Tarkov looter gameplay, the lighting from Resident Evil 2 remake, and the sandbox survival aspect of Project Zomboid where you have a handful of towns and forest in between, and I think you’d have something good. But you’d need a genuine Triple-A studio to put the money in.

Baulder's Gate 3 will win this with zero contest.

Ac6 was incredible

Lies of P is nothing short of a masterpiece. My favorite game of 2023 by far.

Zelda wins... As more people play BG3's bad third act the more it's chances go down.

Armored core has a special place in my heart. I had a cousin with mussel dystrophy that was just a beast at this game. God only knows how he was able to be so good with such a huge handycap literally. Not even being able to lift the control and had to play with it on a desk but still he was so tactical. ❤

ff16 over re4 remake??

I never get the "barebones" story thing many say about armored core. It really gets interesting and gripping the more you play it and I just think that most dismiss it as it isn't told through cutscenes, which is a shame.

BG3 for GOTY though.

I replace remnant 2 to armored core 6 and alan wake 2 to resident evil 4 remake

You have to play FF16 bro. Just don't think of it as a "open world" RPG. Skip through the first sidequests and only do the "+"-ones. Thats all you need and you are set to go.

I just want to remind you of something I just realized that kinda heavily started to influence my perception of a "Game Of The Year" and I think it checks out if you look back at games that previously got GOTY. It's not necessarily about their reception as a whole, or even if they are the perfect fleshed beeing of oneself, but rather what I would also take into consideration is that they are trying something new.

That is my reason why I believe FF16 is still in the race for GOTY and there is only ONE contender that I could see win against it, and that is BG3. Why not Zelda? Because that is just sequel to a already pretty much formulated gameplay, which we have seen in BotW. YES, there are two lackluster aspects on FF16 which are the amount of mindless subquests (besides the REALLY good ones in the last part of the game that actually tell stories between the main characters) and the missed-out opportunity for more equipment customisation. Think about it. TOTK is a great game, but its just a more fleshed out version of BoTW. If I would be judge and I would wager ToTK against FF16, I would give it to FF16 because Square just dared to make that the Action RPG that we got. And as you said yourself; the story, the presentation, even the gameplay (that is a lot more flexible than one-try-streamers would experience) and OST is just a little bit higher.

Same with RE4. Its a great game, no doubt. Its a truthful adaptation of the original as far as I am concerned but then again; its just a remake. FF16 is something NEW. Obviously I played RE4.

So the only contender higher up in my list is BG3. The closest it comes to comparison are games like Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age: Origins. Creativity and gameplay wise thats all I need to say.

I am pretty sure it will be BG3 but I think FF16 will still be nominated for aforementioned reasons, but it wont last against BG3 on a worldwide screen. That beeing said I predict FF16 will get the Game Award for OST by Soken and Voice Acting by Ben Starr.

Bg3 definitely deserves to win its such a masterpiece and a huge moment in gaming that put a spotlight on an incredibly talented and underated studio

Lies of P would definitely get a final spot... It's that good!!... But other than it baldur's gate is the only deserving winner... TOTK is the same as BOTW, Alan wake, spiderman,remenant all are sequels built on the a previously established game

Played them all ( the one’s available). This is why gaming is so subjective , for me starfield is game of the year , at its not even close , it’s hands down game of the year.

Do I think your’re stupid? No wtf everyone enjoys games differently.

For me starfield is goty simply because I played every other game of this list , and I’m a game hopper. I usually have several games installed , get bored of one after an hour , play another one for an hour. And turn off my pc/ps5 or switch (don’t own an Xbox bc what’s the point if I have pc)

Yet since starfield got out , not only did I jumped from playing a couple hours a day to 4 hours a day or even 6 on weekends, but I jumped to playing exclusively, since September 1 I’ve been exclusively playing starfield , I’m 92 hours into the game … I haven’t put this many hours into a game , in around half a month , since the Witcher 3 launched in 2015.
The closest thing to the addiction this game has created for me, in The period between Witcher 3 and starfield , was probably Elden Ring , and I had like 60 hours in at the same time point after release.

So that alone is Goty for me.
Now , I’m a grown man , I know it’s not going to to win. There are many that think starfield is goty , but there are many that think it’s not even good.
A goty winner is usually evenly considered a great game , and goty by some.
A game that many don’t even consider good , won’t win

I appreciate your opinion about starfield. I got tired of Bethesda's games because although they are big, they always fail to miss the mark in making the world feel alive. Those dumbass NPCs always remind me the quality is subpar. Witcher 3 shat on Fallout 4 and now Baldur's Gate 3 is shitting on Starfield in terms of quality.

I'm with you, Remnant 2 has so much to offer in so many ways.
