the lost gold got stuck in the container when you poured the liquid metal into the mold.

I am no scientist, but in all my works with casting anything aluminum or using any of its other alloys with other metals. It is a pain in the ass in general unless you are just casting it. I commend your patience to deal with that much.

Since purple gold is an alloy and looks quite crystalline, maybe the sandpaper is removing the softer gold and not the harder aluminium, if you don't anneal?

If you notice the commercial purple gold is featured as a gem probably ɓecause it is weak, where as you tried to make the entire structure from purple gold and yes probably brittle.
