I Loved this song since it came out in April, but now it makes me cry everytime. I played this song while removing my ex from all my accounts and cutting him off after admitting to my face that he was cheating on me all along. I was crying my eyes out the whole way home. One of the most painful moments of my life is now tangled with this song.

There's a great story behind this.
After working with Taylor Swift on Folklore and on Evermore, Aaron Dessner asked her to return the favor with some guest vocals on this song. Taylor showed up, and in one day wrote a whole second melody, a whole second set of lyrics, recorded all her parts, and turned Matt Berninger's Sad Dad National song into a regretful duet. Aaron was blown away by this, because apparently getting a finished lyric and melody out of Matt is like pulling teeth. But Taylor did it in one day, and neither the lyrics nor the melody were throwaways - she brought her A-game.

I can’t get over how beautiful this song is. This is the most perfect form of a featured song. Taylor didn’t come on for just a line or two. She’s constantly singing in the background and seamlessly intertwining with Matt’s vocals. Matt’s voice is one of the most beautiful to my ears. He has a vulnerability to him and Taylor accompanied it so well. I’m much more of a National fan than a Swiftie but I definitely think Taylor is talented and I adore her in this song.
