The biggest problem is that if I'm not mistaken, there are two guitars in Dookie for the songs

If you want a cheaper way get an older style Marshall mg100dfx I used to get spot on tones with that, maybe add a blues driver and an eq for extra tweaks

Fun Fact: Billie Joe Armstrong used a modded Marshall amplifier which is why the tone is so hard to get.

Sounds like I'm about the same age.
It sounded good but I don't think it was very close. Sounded like you needed more pre volume and less gain.
Dookie sounds like it a lot of crunch and not too much distortion? Basically plenty of pre volume and not much gain. Like it's from the tubes and not all knob.

I also think you had too much gain, it sounds too compressed in comparison.

Well no! Just take a sdjb put it into a 500 bucks fender strat and you are closer than this ever will be no matter what amp or plugin or wetf you use. Though the guitar playing is pretty accurate.

It's so hard to recreate the actual sound of the original recordings without the original equipment but I think you did a wonderful job brother brings back so many childhood memories of BMXing and listening to Green Day and Stone Temple Pilots Soundgarden Pearl Jam Even Flow wonderful job brother man I miss the nineties

You made one of the most common mistakes when trying to emulate BJAs guitar tone which is too much gain. That particular amp ( Marshall Dookie mod) sounds huge. But there really isn't as much gain as most people think in his tone.

Not trying to be a citric, but Billie plays the B5 on the root of the A string, and plays a open A power Chord and plays the C5 on the root of the A string.

This sounds way off to me. I actually recreated it on my own yesterday using the dsp nameless amp sim. Pretty much copied Billy's amp settings, used a v30 IR and a ts808 and it sounds pretty dang close

I think it would have been better to not mix the drums like modern pop punk/metal. Way overprocessed for a 90's punk sound.

@mattvdh
@mattvdh - 28.02.2022 20:35

Nah you gotta use the right kind of guitar and pickup. A Musicman is way to fancy and prestine, you want a grindy sound from the pickups BJ used at the time. The gain was set way too high on the friedman. I'd say it's a cool idea for a video, but if you're going to recreate it, you've gotta use the same pickups, head and cab. I don't think you were even sure on the type of cabinet used. Needs more research and more attention to detail to get the dookie sound.
